Speech impediment. Related?

So lately (past 3 months) I’ve noticed my speech is sometimes choppy or that words kind of flow into each other more than they should. That’s not quite so worrisome because it usually happens when I’m speaking too quickly.

But I’ve also noticed the the “r” sound is increasingly hard for me to pronounce. Even when I’m speaking slowly and clearly. Anyone else develop issues with speech? I’m wondering if these are correlated somehow.

I’ve noticed this too since I started having mental illness issues.

Im wondering if it’s related to disorganized thought… I dunno

I talk too fast sometimes or once in a while I’ll slur my words.
Slurring is medication related.

I double a lot I always thought it was due to my condition.

But basically my sentences go from “I went to the store” to “I went went to the store”

I’m not on meds so I don’t typically slur… unless there’s alcohol involved lol. It’s more of a shortening of words via combination. For example, “Can I get you a bag?” Becomes “kinniget you a bag?”

Meds cans be rough. It’s good you’re aware it sometimes has that affect on you. Have you pdocs had any suggestions for that?

I do doubles too. Sometimes more than double. Especially when there’s an “I” in the middle of a sentence. Strange.

Disorganized speech patterns can be a symptom of schizophrenia. Slurred speech can be a med side effect, but I see you already addressed that.

My pdoc lowered the Risperidone a bit.
The slurring has gotten less over time.

I can relate to it. I had speech impairment when I was on Rispridol and Invega. Very bad feelings for me. I quit them amd switched to Amisulpride. Feeling much better now.

Sometimes I more than double too. I found it helps to have more of a rhythm to my speech. Sometimes I even tap on things around me to keep a beat between syllables.

Also I found singing helped me a bit.

I LOVE that idea. I say the same things over and over for work and they start to come out so quickly that I stutter or screw something up and people look at me like I’m incompetent. That’s my least favorite thing. The tapping will help get every syllable out and slow me down. Thank you noise for this gold nugget of information.

I started stuttering a lot after I started getting sick. When I got on meds and started getting better this started to go away. I also doubled a lot on words and I think I had problems staying on topic a bit. I always wondered if these, especially the stuttering and repeating of words, were related to my illness since they came and went with the other symptoms. Though I’d have to ask my husband if I am any better staying on topic. I think I am.

Ask him. I’d be interested to know. Glad to hear you’re doing better. Strange how these things happen.
