hiya, i'm olivia. i've had schizophrenia for almost 6 years and recently i have tried plant based eating as a way to reduce hallucinations.
About a week ago I started a juice fast, drinking 6 glasses of juice a day and since then i have done a coffee enema (which actually ruptured a blood vessel, so i had to get checked out at hospital, so not sure whether i should recommend it, but it DID clear out my bowels) and i am also eating 100% plant based food.
My auditory hallucinations are still detectable, but they are mostly muffled and so I can't hear what they are saying. Also I was feeling depressed and scared and remembered that healthy oils are meant to be good for stress (or something like that) so I had some avocado and peanuts and felt relaxed instantly.
I have also been taking 500mg - 1.5g of Niacin (vitamin B3) a day, which is also working better than usual. (have had almost no sound at all from the voices)
And also, also I had coffee yesterday and today which did not make me hallucinate like crazy as it used to.
So since then I have been taught the basics of salsa dancing from my flatmate and even got back in to my old hobby of drawing.
There is some evidence that a gluten free diet can help a minority of people with psychosis. I tried and it did nothing for me except hurt my wallet. But I do enjoy being a vegetarian. It hasn’t helped my mental health, but it has helped with energy levels and hair/nail strength
I will advise you to stay away from anything advertising itself as a cleanse though. They’re all bogus except charcoal cleanses, and those are very dangerous for anyone on any kind of medication because it removes all the meds built up in your system.
Thanks. I’ve had severe psychotic symptoms for almost 6 years and almost constantly. it’s felt like I’ve been existing in multiple hell realms…
It made you poop a lot. That’s not a cleanse. It’s a diuretic. You poop all you need to naturally. Pooping more than that is only getting rid of necessary nutrients before they can absorb into your bloodstream. And, as you experienced; they can have dangerous side effects.
I think you’re taking far too much niacin for it to be safe long term.
There’s a lot of false hope around niacin for schizophrenia.
Risks. Niacin does have risks. It can cause liver problems, stomach ulcers, changes to glucose levels, muscle damage, low blood pressure, heart rhythm changes, and other issues. People with any health condition including liver or kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular problems need to talk to a doctor before using niacin supplements. Do not treat high cholesterol on your own with over-the-counter niacin supplements.
Ok, thanks for that… I don’t think it’ll be too bad if I leave out the niacin. I didn’t take any today and I still can’t hear what the voices are saying. Will read the articles though
