So far I've tried to help me sleep

I’ve tried trazadone and melatonin and of course my saphris to help me sleep through the night. Yet here I am after only sleeping for a few hours and I’m up already. It’s the darndest thing.

My brain just wants to be up in the middle of the night. I don’t know why??? I guess I just miss you all so much I have to get up in the middle of the night to come see you. LOL.

I guess the next thing I’ll try is ambien, maybe that will keep me asleep for 8 hours. If not then I’ll just sleep during the day and be a night person from now on.

Are you irritated? You have a lot of energy, maybe? Hypomania/mania?

No, I’m not irritated or upset in any way. I’m just awake. It’s like the night and day got switched in my brain somehow. I’m just sleepy in the day and awake at night. I never had this happen before.

I’m not manic, no extra energy. I can sleep in the day. I skip sleeping in the day to try to force my brain to sleep at night and I still can’t sleep all the way through the night.

My brain just wants to be awake at around 1am. It’s getting kinda funny actually. Maybe I’ll just roll with it and stop worrying about it. Maybe it will just straighten itself out someday.

Have you ever had ambien before?

No. What is it?

Ambien is more of a get you to sleep med. not really keep you asleep. My experience anyways. That’s what a psychiatrist told me about ambien. Some people take seroquel for sleep, or hydroxyzine. Trazodone. I build up a tolerance to trazodone, so it is pointless for me on a regular basis. I use to be on 450mg of trazodone and it got so it did not help me sleep anymore. My doctor told me that can happen with some people. In my opinion seroquel works pretty well, but not everyone can take it.

what is seroquel? is it an ssri? I can take 100 mg of hydroxyzine and not even get sleepy. I used to take a lot of benadryl so I’m immune to the sleepy properties of it.

Seroquel (quetiapine) is an antipsychotic medication that is pretty sedating. If it don’t make you tired, then you are a superhero. Benadryl tolerance happens. I didn’t like hydroxyzine either. I take seroquel XR currently and I am not sleeping as much. Regular seroquel is more sedating though. The regular kind makes me breathe weird and not feel good. But the seroquel isn’t great for my voices. Wondering if I should try something new.

I believe it’s one of the first aps I had that made me gain 40 lbs real quick and it’s on my tried and failed list. But that was before this sleep issue came up. Thank you very much, I will keep it in mind. So it’s a no for ambien then in your opinion?

You can try it and give it a go. I Found it useless. Have you tried trazodone or mirtazapine? Latuda?

yes the mirtazapine or remeron as I know it actually caused me to stay up all night and the trazadone had no effect at all an gave me a yucky headache.

My pdoc said she would normally prescribe and additional ap for this problem but can’t because I already take two. So I guess that would preclude the seroquel too, hmmm.

Well I guess it’s not the end of the world if I sleep during the day. Who knows maybe the ambien will work for me. I’ll give the melatonin a few more days and see what happens and try to decide whether or not I want to risk taking ambien or not.

Which ap’s are you on?

I take saphris and rexulti

Is the rexulti new or have you been on it a while? Do you take in the morning or at night?

well new and old kinda, I had been taking it about a year and then stopped for a month and then started taking it again. I take it in the morning because it’s a little energizing, but maybe I need to think about taking it at night and see if it’s the culprit. I mean maybe I’m processing it differently now for some strange reason. The only thing that changed is I had a manic episode and they doubled my mood stabilizer, topomax, and I now take it morning and night. Oh and I had to stop my ssri because of the manic episode.

Topamax made me psychotic, and made it impossible to sleep. So how it works for mania is beyond me. Maybe your body is adjusting to the topamax, or your brain is gearing up for some hypomania. I was up ( mania I guess) for two weeks little sleep little food cleaning crazy my family was like you need to sleep and I was like nah. Now I am sleeping but still awake most of the night. Nights and days mixed up. Antidepressants are terrible for bp, I go manic on them.

Gm @Leaf. Hmmm Id ask your dr. But if you’re on topmax it should negate the weight gain if had before from seroquel. Seroquel works great for most. I’d personally be hesitant on ambien.

Is stress eating at you? I know you’ve had some frustration with family. It might be s therapy issue and not a medicine issue…just a thought

I guess it could be stress. I know I don’t really mind the time alone in the middle of the night. Is that bad. The only thing that really bothers me is being tired in the middle of the day. It would be great if I was hypo manic then i could stay up all night and all day no problem. But 4 hours sleep isn’t enough without the hypo mania. I didn’t know topomax could cause a problem. I will certainly ask my pdoc about it. Maybe I need to drop back down to just 100 mgs again.

Explain what all is going on to your dr or drs. Stress can really impact us. I know you’ve been struggling and adding more meds might not be the best thing because there are side effects. What side effects you have vary from person to person. However, some of your meds might be interacting idk, I’m not a dr. But I’d be wary of adding ambien tbh :hugs:
