Hey, there’s no shame in going to a food bank or food pantry if you need it. Churches often have them, they give you a couple of bags of groceries once or twice a month. They’re good for people in your position; that’s what they’re there for. You can check online and see if there’s any food pantries near you. They often give you fruit and vegetables and staples like eggs and rice, beans, pasta , peanut butter, bread etc. It doesn’t mean the people who go there are bums, they are just families and other people who are struggling to make ends meet.
Thanks @77nick77, I worked in church kitchen, but it’s a too far from my home.
You must have a card to eat there, which you get if you don’t have any income.
Im not ashamed, I sent friend when he was struggling there.
Why is your disability that low?? I mean is it 150$ a month?
Eastern Europe pension…
Ok, I understand.
You need to make a budget then. When I was dirt poor I made a budget and was strict with my diet.
I’m sorry you are going through this.
No, thanks @Speedy, thats a scratch for me…
I lived too long on couch, doing nothing for my self…
Get on food stamps.
I assume you are living at home due to no rent dependent on family but you got a roof over your head.
You have $150 a mo. It goes to bills. You are left with nothing.
SSI? Usually is $600/mo so I don’t understand why its so low.
I am on food stamps and its $225 / mo per person.
What options do you have to get more income? Appeal to SSI?
If you leave home, you will still struggle. Where would you go? You’d be on someone’s couch. No you need to figure out your income / bills and make it work while you have a roof over your head.
Thinking whole day about that @Kxev…
Yeah, don’t burn your bridges. If you have to put up with some abuse until you find a better solution to your money problems than put up with it awhile longer. If you’re living rent free, you’re not going to find that anywhere else probably. Don’t make any rash decisions. Explore all your options while you live there. Some people made some good suggestions. Even if you worked just a few hours a week that’s better than nothing. Eat economically and cheaply, beans, rice, pasta etc.
Here’s what I do - I make enough on SSDI to pay for car insurance and rent in my apartment
I have $200+ a month on food stamps
I live walking distance to groceries if need be
And I work 15 hours weekly to pay for stuff like toothpaste, gasoline, shoes, pretty much anything I might need and enough to treat myself, as well as thrift store stuff
Maybe you can sort of make a goal to do something similar?
Some of you guys are missi g the fact that he is not in the US. This is Eatern Eiropean disability, so it’s very low.
@anon42606141 , I’m sorry, I don’t know how you do it. I thought I lived off very little.
The only thing I know is to buy the very cheapest foods. Rice, beans, ramen. Some canned veggies mixed in ramen makes for a good meal. Its boring, but filling.
Thanks @anon4362788…
The thing that hurts most is that they all have income of 800$ and savings…
Do they only treat the disabled badly or are they mean to everyone?
Well, we have some model that when they raise pensions, it’s same percent for all…
What that means is I get 6$,and those who have more get 50$
But the food is getting rapidly expensive…
You mentioned Easter Europe. Try going to a local bazaar/market and see if the vegetable tent owners throw out unsightly vegetables. They might ask for a tip, they might simply plump the crates of ugly but edible vegetables at a dumpster.
Otherwise, visit a church or hare-krishnas temple. Some choice restaurants just might give away some scraps of food, like a fish restaurant giving away fish broth. Hard to say. You have to look around, ask around. I know it’s hard, but you have to adapt. Do not expect your condition to improve. Struggle now.
+++ If you have access to the internet, look up urban foraging too. A homeless guy I know does that all the time and gets by good enough. One can barely tell he is on the streets. He also plants potatoes near a lake and gets 5-10 kilos of potatoes yearly.
Couldn’t you get food stamps or the equivalent? I only get $79/mo but with food stamps I get by. And don’t feel bad about going to food outreaches. It’s what they’re for. I used them regularly when I was worse off. No shame there.
Do you have a gofundme page?
