Me and my partner will be looking at getting a dog at some point after we move. I was very keen on getting a poodle but I found a charity that trains dogs for autism adults and children. If I do indeed have autism which I’m not sure but both the psychiatrist and clinical psychologist feels I have … if it turns out I do, I’m gonna apply to get one. I can’t take care of the dog myself so as long as my partner is going to help we will both get a Labrador .
I think it’s nice that you guys are looking into service dogs— they make a world of difference for the people who have them.
However, I want to say that all dogs have the capacity to be healers in some way or another. Dogs are loving creatures in general, who just want to be with their humans. That alone is paramount when facing an illness as debilitating and isolating as schizophrenia.
Personally, I think a lab is a great choice for a companion. They’re even-keeled and intelligent dogs, and there’s a reason why you find so many of them working as therapy dogs.
I hope your new pal brings you joy and good health .
Good luck @anon25873142
Labs make great service and therapy dogs, especially yellow labs.
I had a chocolate Labrador pup but she was very sick.
We had to rehome her.
She was thankfully adopted by a loving family who lived on a farm!
I didn’t want to get a dog that was bigger than a toy poodle but I looked at some videos and I’m not so scared of them. My partner said I could potentially take them to work.
Goldens make great service/therapy dogs too!
If I can’t get a service dog , it’s ok. We will get a dog anyway but it would help if the dog was trained to help with all my anxieties.
Yes I’ve been looking into both labradoodles and golden doodles as well.
Getting a srrvice dog takes a lot of work. You have to find the perfect dog and if you are involced with training its a lot of consistent work every day. Its expensive if it isnt funded for. And there are other yupes of service dogs besides autism dogs, theres also psychiatric service dogs that can help with reality checks and such. My dog is trained to do deep pressure, shes not a service dog by any means but i taught her to lay on top of me when i need it and she does respond to my panic attacks
I spent this weekend in a hotel. I couldn’t sleep the first two nights because the family beside me had a support animal for their kid in their room.
It. Barked. All. Night.
Every. Night.
The hotel was afraid to do anything about it and let the damn thing keep barking, but they moved me to a room at the other end of the building for the last night. I phoned the 24-hour number and got my entire stay refunded.
