Is anyone else diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder? If so, do mixed episodes count in the criteria or is mania/hypomania still required.

I have schizoaffective too, I’m relatively stable on sertaline and lithium, but before I was properly medicated I had rapid cycling mood swings and mixed episodes as well… It’s a hell of an illness, you never know where you’re at.
I have Schizoaffective bipolar type and I’ve had mixed episodes and mania.
With depression episodes
then you have schizoaffective or maybe you need a hypomanic episode for diagnosis. I am not sure
Did you also have mania? Or episodes of depression? I have a friend that may be diagnosed but only has depression and mixed episodes.
Yes, I had episodes of depression, episodes of mania, mixed episodes etc. It was one hell of a ride for many years, I’m so glad to be relatively stable on the meds now.

Sza - depressive type doesn’t require mania, just depressive episodes.

Yeah, I’m dx’d schizoaffective, at first depressive type then they began noticing that, mostly when I’m noncompliant, my psychotic episodes had a tinge of mania, so now I’m bipolar type. I’m also dx’d borderline personality disorder based on my tendency to cut/burn myself ONLY when I’m sick…to me that behavior serves to “center” myself to the physical when the mental is too much. Anyone else out there ever do that? Just curious…

What do you mean a tinge of mania ??
I mean an inability to sleep, not eating, persistent irritability and constant physical movement unrelated to either my hallucinations or paranoia. Like when they inject you with 10mg Haldol and your STILL pacing around continuously…and get in fights with other patients cuz they won’t stop yakking.
Im schizoaffective and have mixed episodes often usually when im transitioning into a mania. I have terrible inner anger and lots of energy. Im on lamictal and zyprexa to control it. its hell and all i want to do it escape my own body. From what i read a mixed episode of mania and depression at the same time, in my experience zyprexa is the only drug that brings me out of it.

I have Schizoaffective Bipolar Type 2. I don’t think I’ve ever been really hypomanic except one time I think I was in a mixed state. The professionals never really told me what they thought was going on except once they said I had depression. I was not forthcoming wiht how I was feeling, especially in the behavioral ward. But I had a super intense desire to socialize and other hypomania symptoms along with the depression sypmtoms. I want to bring it up with my psychiatrist but I’m afraid to.

I take Depakote ER for my mixed mood swings.
Works like a charm!
So does risperidone.
I am sza bipolar type. I take Risperdal Consta, Geodon, and Seroquel for the psychosis, Celexa for the depression, and Klonipin for the anxiety. They all work great for me.
