Scared to death of general anesthesia

My problem has always been nighttime. It seems all trouble lies within my semiconscious state. Have to have back surgery and scared to death of being put under. Can anyone help: offer some insight?

I had it and survived. You’ll be ok.

Do you have bad nightmares and visions?

No. But there are no dreams etc under general anesthetic. One minute you’re counting backwards from 100 maybe, the next minute you’re awake feeling like you have a bit of a hangover.

I am on Risperidone and it causes me to go into very deep sleep. If my sleep is interrupted I have bad visions. I shutter to think what is going on in my unconscious in this deep sleep. Maybe my meds are too strong?

I had bad dreams / nightmares on seroquel. I got bad dreams if I didn’t take my current AP (abilify) at the same time every day.

Were you on them when you had surgery?

I worry about going under also because I have vivid hallucinogenic dreams.

I have funny story though. I went in for a colonoscopy and they knocked me out. When I was waking up the anesthesiologist asked me “so how was it”? I was high as hell and said “that was great”. Him and the doctor started laughing and I heard one say “if only you knew what we did to your butt”. I was referring to the drugs coming out of it.

No I wasn’t on them when I had surgery.

I rely heavily on conscious reasoning to get me through: waking up and talking through my night terrors. I am certain I will be fine…in the daylight that is.

I’ve heard Seroquel gives you very vivid dreams and comparing I’ll have to agree.
They used to be nightmares all the time.

Then I got better and nightmares only some time. They can be hard to shake off. I hold stuff and concentrate on it. Like Little stuffed animals that are non threatening and comforting. Then transfer concentration OUT ward.

I got propofonol for a colonoscopy. No dreams at all. Puff your out. Poof your back. It was sorta fun actually. So just relax.

I thought about that myself, an object. Thanks so much for your reply.

It’s dreamless unconsciousness. No REM sleep. I’ve been under general anesthesia five times, and once under a twilight sleep drug. I’ve never dreamed.

I have a huge anesthetic phobia, and it gets worse every time rather than better. But every time, it is fine. If there’s any specific question I can answer for you, let me know.

Poof i’m out and poof I’m awake…to what: ouch? Oh god what a scary and unpredictable experience.

I won’t come to while they are cutting into me?

No it’s very predictable. You’re back in a flash. But you look at the clock and say what the hell? Time warp.

I had my gallbladder out and came to hyperventilating. They had to speak calmly until they got the oxygen. I fear deep deep sleep and coming up from it. Like dying and coming back into your body.

No, unconsciousness comes like blackness. You’ll wake up after it’s all over.

I hope not hyperventilating and scared to death :frowning:

I thank all of you for your responses. Seriously.
