Doctor says I can’t have medication for anxiety while on antipsychotics? So anyway they’ve swapped from seroquel to risperdal. Not going to make the switch until I get a second opinion and more info… have you taken both / either of these and which one did you like?
Ask your Doctor to advice you on Tianeptine it works for anxiety and can be taken with aantipsychotics
I’ve taken Seroquel for over a decade. It has no appreciable effect on me. I can’t really tell I’m taking it. I’ve been on Risperdal only very briefly, not long enough to know how it would affect me. I think it is stronger than Seroquel. Some people find Seroquel very sedating, but I don’t.
As far as I am concerned I hate resperidone and olanzapine
I like Aripiprzole/abilify
I hate risperidone, that med gives most people unbearable side effects. It is actually the cheapest antipsychotic new or old generation. It is cheap for a reason, no one stays on it except for a few unlucky folks.
I am puzzled by that. They never refused me medication for anxiety because I was on an anti-psychotic. They did take me off Klonopin when I told my pdoc I had given a couple to this girl. That was stupid of me.
I am on Risperdal. For some people it is used as an antidepressant, but for me it actually caused depression in me. Everyone reacts differently to these meds.
Although I should say I’m starting to acclimate to that side effect.
I think I will get a second opinion… she told me that mixed with antipsychotics it can actually worsen the anxiety. I suggested that I would stop taking antipsychotics because anxiety is crippling and she said not an option. Not my normal doc and not a psych either
That’s new to me. Both anti-psych’s and anti-anxiety drugs are sedatives. I might think they would slow you down and muddle you, but I can’t see that combining them causes anxiety. You’re right. Get a second opinion.
It’s pointless asking people for their experiences on meds. Everybody is different and meds affect everyone differently. I had a really bad time on both of these meds. Currently abilify is keeping me stable, but other people here have had a bad time on abilify.
Quetiapine should be better
I also think the anxiety is worse than the schizophrenia. My doctor prescribed me gabapentin for anxiety. It’s technically a drug for nerve pain, not anxiety, but it does help. Risperdal works great for some people and awful for others. It did a great job of getting rid of my symptoms without sedating me.
I wouldn’t say pointless. I don’t intend to not take the medication, even if 100% of people say it’s bad. I understand everyone is different but /some/ side effects are pretty much universal and it’s nice to know what to expect. Thank you for sharing your experience
Thanks! Yeah I feel as though my anxiety may even set off my sz. For example the more anxious I get, the deeper paranoia sets in. When I’m paranoid I find it hard to get grounded again and that’s when it all falls apart.
Quetiapine is seroquel just fast release. Seroquel is slower release so I use it for night time. 25mg quetiapine 3 times a day and 300mg Seroquel at night, except the seroquel is being changed to low dose risperdal
I’ve never been suggested ablify but everyone seems to like it
If it weren’t for the supposed weight gain on seroquel I would try that one. It has the least EPS effects like stiffness and restlessness. Risperdal is bad in that department and has weight gain as well. Not to mention that I’ve be seeing commercials for class action lawsuits against the makers of risperdal. It does work wonders for severe psychosis though and if I were in a desperate state risperdal is usually the only med that will pull me out of It.
I’ve been on Seroquel for 3 years and haven’t gained a single kilo. It does make you hungry though so I think thats where the weight gain thing comes from.
Sheesh! Not a single kilo? Maybe I should try that one myself. Every one I take makes me gain weight.
The one I’m on now, not so bad but still noticeable.
My friend is on seroquel and he is skinny as a rail. He’s a vegan crossfit addict though, so that’s probably a factor.
