I just saw Jeff’s pic again on LinkedIn: so red like a piece of raw meat. I hope he doesn’t drink anymore, but I don’t trust his word much. I can’t get a-hold of him since his accident by email or phone. He’s not being very smart. Sounds like the mental damage he’s done is irreversible. I take pleasure in using my brain, but Jeff… has no brain left! He panics about that sometimes – then drinks again to forget about it. He’s in a terrible bind with alcohol, but won’t take action to help himself. It’s his life. I hear in his voice how sort of simple he’s become; nowhere near the genius he used to be. While Jeff realizes this, he only drinks more to drown the truth. It’s a vicious circle that will kill him. Had he been drinking before his motorcycle accident? It’s a safe bet. I can’t bear to look at him struggling with withdrawals sometimes. He needs hospitalization, but won’t listen to anybody. He needs residential care. Perhaps the only person who knows about his jam is me. I feel like doing something, but if he won’t respond, well, I suppose I could call the Florence police station. I don’t know Jeff’s address, but his name might be info enough for them to go check on him. If I care, and if Jeff still doesn’t call me back, then calling the cops is the thing to do.

You should only call the cops on someone if you think they’re an immediate danger to themselves or others. Otherwise, he’s an adult who can ruin his own life as much as he wants. He has free will.
Yes. My brother has told me he’s had a suicide thought before. It was a month back, but he has thought it.
You could go to an al-anon meeting in your area to get advice. Or google “al anon” . it’s for people who have relatives with alcohol problems.
Does your brother live alone? Try calling him again and if he still doesn’t answer, leave him a voicemail message that you’re worried and if you don’t hear back from him you’ll contact the police to see if they can do a welfare check on him.

OK, @Moonbeam, I did just what you said. Yes he does live alone, and the only family that knows his situation is me. I can’t prove that he still drinks, but he’s always lied to me about the issue. Now, it’s wait and see if he calls back.
