Now that I don’t paint anymore I really want to take up leather craft as a hobby…I am going to save 20 a month until I can get my tools and first couple kits. I always adored working on leather projects as a boy…made my uncle a wallet…I just want to do coasters and a couple bracelets for now.
Lee recently picked up some stuff at Hobby Lobby for leather goods she is making some cell phone purses for her daughter and for my mom there are lots of patterns on YouTube that you can choose from for your leather goods lots of instruction videos and patterns you can buy online talk about turning the box at the shop downtown might be the thing to do anyway jukebox enjoy
Does that stuff even sell well now? I see a lot of it at trade shows and flea markets, but it doesn’t seem to move well anymore.
Edit- I ask because I hate to see you spend more than you get back.
To answer that question does it sell well I used to make saddles $50 worth of material $1,000 a saddle I don’t know tell me
Intricate cowboy stuff, yes. Must be of high quality. Redneck stuff like wallets with Ford/Harley logo or knife sheaths, yes. Coasters, no.
the leather kits I will buy like coasters and bracelets are very reasonable…I don’t intend on selling any of it…just a hobby. make nice Christmas gifts.
(May I ask why you stopped painting?)
I’d say, if you feel motivated for leather work, go for it!
If it is for gifts, thats cool. Crafts can be fickle. I stopped trying to sell crafts because materials outweighed any profit.
Leather working sounds really fun! And you know you liked it when you were younger, so hopefully that means that you’ll still love it now. Can’t wait to see your projects.
I’m the same way with my crochet hobby. I enjoy making stuff, which does cost money because of supplies, but I just do it for fun. I don’t really plan on selling anything. Maybe that will change with time, as I get better at crocheting, but for now, I just make stuff for enjoyment. Well, and I make stuff as gifts, no expectation of them paying me.
@Andrey I just felt like I have done enough painting for now…not going to put the idea out of commission, just don’t want to right now. and I love leather work.
@anon4362788 yes total just hobby for gifting. if I ever get good enough I will try and do purses and wallets…intimidated by stitchwork on borders.
I miss archery. Need to get back into it this year.
