When did you tell your kids that you have a mental illness. My boys are nine and ten, and my nine year old insists on being in the room with all my various appointments not just psych. He says he wants to make sure I am okay and to hear what the doctors say. Do you let your kids come to your psych appointments in general?
My kid (8) knows a bit, but only superficially. He doesnt know my diagnosis. I most definitely wouldnt let him be there when i have an appointment. It would burden him in an “adult” way i think. Also: it is private.
He does know im ill and we spoke about that in a very easy to understand way from his toddler years, fitting his age and the situation (i was in hospital then a few times). I especially repeat i still love him when i feel bad and it is not his fault, and let him express how he feels about it and what he notices. We read a book about a dad with depression recently and then speak about his experiences.
