Psychology behind hunting

I don’t understand why people like hunting.

Is it the chase or the kill?

Probably people who don’t have a lot of power hunt.

It’s interesting to me that civilians hunt more than veterans.

Some people still hunt for food. It’s no worse than eating meat and having someone else do the killing for you.

Hunting just for sport is a little more questionable.

I don’t understand the thrill behind hunting for sport.

I’ve been happy to eat venison and rabbit and squirrels from hunters. We always ate or shared what the family or friends hunted.

I can not eat that.

I hope no one is trying to make you.

Most of the hunters i know hunt because even the cheapest ground beef in the store costs about $5/lb, but a hunting license (and license for a specific animal in the case of closely tracked populations) is only $25 and the meat can feed the whole family for an entire season.

I don’t understand people who are fascinated with guns either. When I was in the army I shot a m4. The only cool part was how light it was. Other than that it did nothing for me. I nearly killed myself when I grazed the wood block.

I have been told that in the UK and some other countries, hunting is a rich person’s sport as opposed to a means of survival, but I don’t know if this is true or if it’s someone’s biased opinion.

Ok so it’s not about power. What is it about?

Im sure it’s about power for some people. But in the case of lots of folks,it is simply about being able to feed your family. It is also necessary for population control, because humans have been hunting since the dawn of time, and without us, prey animals will become overpopulated. That leads to overgrazing which kills off plant life, then to widespread diseases and mass dieoffs.

There’s many reasons people hunt. For some its the thrill, for some its family bonding, others it’s to feed their family. For most its a mix of the three. Its also for conservation and ethical harvesting. I feel better about harvesting an animal from the wild than eating something from a slaughterhouse with less than ethical practices. Not to mention it plays an important role in population control, which falls into conservation.

I’ve raised and killed my own animals for meat. It’s humbling. You realize where your meat is coming from and take responsibility.

I’m not for killing animals at all.

The only hunter I’ve ever known used a bow & arrow to hunt wild boar. Gives the boar a chance. And incidentally, he gave us a bunch of sausage and pork chops. The sausage was way better than the stores.

I have Metis and Cree friends who hunt for food, but also because it’s part of their tradition and spirituality. They do not approve of people who hunt for sport.

I think trophy hunting (which I find disgusting) is based on entertainment and status. These guys kill big game just to mount the animal’s head on their living room wall. It’s like buying a Rolls Royce.
