so the title says all what are you guys experience with seeing a psychologist? does it help? pls share your experience thx ^^
I guess it depends on the therapy they offer.
I once saw a psychologist (once only) and he wanted me to write down my life story for him. Even though I went there with a specific concern, anxiety borne from schizophrenia.
He was an ‘analyse your life’ type therapist and I knew that wasn’t going to help me so I never went back.
I would still like to try another one though because I have heard very good things about CBT.
And welcome to the forum!
I love my therapist, we work so well together, he helps me a lot. You should definitely try it.
I do CBT.
Yes it does, they are there for reasons…they are professional who study so much for counseling others. They can be trusted but you must believe it too
I sort of know it a little bit from the inside…but to give an impartial answer, studies say yes it helps and that most people are improved a good bit by eight sessions
My therapist is fantastic. Very helpful.
My suggestions about therapy are:
-
Have goals. Know what you want from your sessions.
-
Communicate those goals. Make sure your therapist knows what you expect. Think of it like hiring a plumber or an electrician. You would tell them what the problem was that you hired them to fix. You wouldn’t just open the door to your house and say, So what do you think?
-
Come prepared to work. There’s the joke about the psychologist only being able to change the lightbulb if the lightbulb really wants to change. It’s a punchline, but it’s also true. If you aren’t serious about getting help, or aren’t willing to really listen to your therapist, then therapy is a waste of your time and the therapist’s time.
-
Be prepared to listen. You’re there for a reason. Some of the things you hear may hurt your feelings or make you angry. Remember that you’re trying to improve some part of your life, and it isn’t necessarily going to be easy or fun.
-
Write things down between sessions. It’s easy to have a thousand things to talk about but remember none of them when you’re sitting on that couch. Write them down so you remember and make the most of your sessions.
thanks for the replies guys. I definitely gonna think about it
where do you guys find a good therapist ? Im just using google right now but any good suggestions?
Psychologytoday.com is good I hear
I was referred to mine by my GP.
what does GP stands for ?
General practitioner I suppose
Check out the link I sent and go to "find a therapist ". It has a picture of all the therapists in your area and what they specialize in
I’ve had a couple of good ones, but most have been horrible. It seems to be a field that attracts broken people who are attracted to other broken people with the end result being a multitude of positive feedback loops. I avoid them like the plague now. If I do therapy, it comes from a booklet.
What specifically did you want to know?
General practiciner (family Dr)!
Deal with your issues you reduce symptoms. Psychotherapies at least the earlier ones teach you about yourself. Learn enough about yourself you don’t trigger off the illness ever again.
I’m doing CBT now. Have tried mindfulness and relaxing/meditation. That did not help. Let’s see if CBT does the trick. I’m seeing a therapist to reduce voices and catastrophic thoughts.
I got my psychologist/psychiatrist/nurse from the national health care system.
What country are you from? we are from all over the world here, maybe someone in the same country could point at some direction to you.
And welcome! I hope you feel like home.
