Propranolol for tardive dyskinesia?

I know some people have used propranolol for akathisia, but has anyone here used it successfully for TD?

I know it’s prescribed off label for TD.

My mouth won’t stop chewing and grinding and moving, probably from the Navane I take; it’s a first gen AP.

I have low to normal blood pressure, so it might be a concern to take BP meds that can lower it, as I’ve also had issues with orthostatic hypotension. But the benefits, in addition to TD, might be help with my migraines and tackling the physical symptoms of my (sometimes crippling) anxiety.

Thoughts?

I took propranolol and it didn’t work for me.

I passed out twice while I was on it and almost passed out on the regular.

So my doctor took me off of it.

Prescribed for anxiety.

I know that stuff helps a lot of people around here,

But I’ve honestly never heard of it being used for TD.

I hope it works for you.

Well, that sucks.

I don’t know if my pdoc would prescribe it. I just found it in a list of off label meds for TD.

The reviews for the newer meds don’t inspire a lot of confidence in me, plus there’s no generic for them yet, which makes it harder to get them/get insurance approval.

I think there’s a bunch of things we can try. I have my next appointment with him on the 15th.

My better half takes Propanalol for tremors and it works but she isn’t sz.

I take Benedryl for them and it works too.

Many years ago I had migraines and took it. I called it inderall I think and I took it for about 6 or 8 weeks and have never had any more migraines.

Neither of us has TD though. Just tremors. Mine are mostly in my hands and arms.

Were there any bad side effects for you?

I take it for akathisia. I never get akathisia anymore, so I guess it helps. I don’t have TD so I don’t know how it works for that.

I’ve noticed zero side effects from propranolol.

No. I was about 18 or 19 when I took it. That’s been a few years ago.

I took Navane many years ago, but I don’t have TD probably because I didn’t take it for very long.

There are two FDA-approved meds for TD: Deutetrabenazine (Austedo) and Valbenazine (Ingrezza).

Vitamin E, vitamin B6, melatonin, and ginkgo biloba were all mentioned on the 'net. Ashwagandha may also help.

Of course don’t use what I say in lieu of professional care.

Hey @Pandy

I created a thread about TD Medications a long time ago because I wanted to be prepared if it happens to me.

Anyways, the only 3 meds mentioned in that thread are Ingrezza, Austedo and Benadryl.

Benadryl is cheap and readily available, have you tried it?

I’m going to try it tonight. (I just read about it after poking around on the internet.) Thanks!!

I take 50 mg of Benedryl for tremors. That’s two over the counter ones. I have a script though and get them in singles.

The lady at urgent care looks at you kinda funny when you tell her you take 50 mg of Benedryl a day and don’t have any allergies.

Troll!!! Again!

Recently, I took Propranolol for greater than a year. I didn’t see any benefit from it.

For TD I take healthy fats. Currently, I am taking Sunflower Lecithin and Phosphatidylserine.

If youre a smoker, switch to the nicotine gum. Youll thank me later.

If not, best remedy to stop progression of TD is lots of dopamine, so ask your pdoc if you can go on Wellbutrin or something.

Drink lots of coffee and exercise.

Hope this helps.

I heard Benadryl works. It makes me sleepy, though. I wonder if that would wear off.

The first med I tried for my insomnia was Benadryl and the sleepiness effect wore off on me very quickly.

I took 75mg and it worked for 3 nights then I developed a tolerance to it and it never put me to sleep after that. I tried increasing the dosage and I went as high as 175mg one night and it still didn’t put me to sleep so I quit it. I was only on it for about a week and a half before moving on to something else.

It didn’t make me sleepy after I developed that tolerance, but everyone is different. It may continue to make you drowsy or it may not.

Well, if it would still work for TD without causing insomnia, that would be great! I just want to run it by my pdoc, to see if there’s a problem with taking long term Benadryl.

I’ve read mixed messaging about that on the Internet. The one thing that did concern me about long term use was a risk in developing dementia.

Yes, I read that, too. As if my memory from all of this other ■■■■ weren’t bad enough…
