Prolactin levels in drug-naïve patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders

CONCLUSIONS: A higher serum prolactin level was found in drug naïve, newly diagnosed patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders compared to healthy controls, prior to starting any antipsychotic treatment.

I am puzzled by this. Are prolactin levels related to degree of psychosis? If so what about the therapeutic value of drugs like risperidone that are known to raise prolactin?

It could be an effect/byproduct ‘of psychosis’ and need not cause it.

Well prolactin comes from the pituitary gland, that is known to have abnormal growth in sz.

My levels are fine. Abilify for the win!

I dont buy it - certain antipsychotics like risperidone cause higher prolactin levels - period.

This tends to corroborate Dr. GERNEZ hypothesis on schizophrenia with the triggering role of growth hormone on prefrontal cortex maturation during teenage/young adulthood and the associated therapeutic proposal consisting in drying up growth hormone production.

Interesting, reading about him. Highly importante, with little recognition

An hormonal hypothesis of schizophrenia should meticulously investigate in diagnosed drug-naïve patients, abnormal levels of prolactin and growth hormone (pituitary) and the valentonin/6-méthoxy-harmalan waking hormonal balance (pineal gland)
