Possible link between zink deficiency and schizoprenia

“The current meta-analysis combined 10 studies, including a total of 658 schizophrenia patients and 1008 controls. Serum zinc concentration was significantly lower in individuals with schizophrenia than controls (12.81 μg/dl (1.96 μmol/l), t = -2.59, 95% CI: -22.50 to -3.12, p < 0.05). The reduction in zinc levels was more pronounced among inpatients and newly diagnosed, drug-naïve patients.”

I find it interesting that, after all is said and done, something simple as Zinc deficiency may be the cause.

I started taking zinc when Covid first hit. My pharmacist claimed that vitamin C didn’t do much unless I was an athlete exercising a lot in the far north of Canada. Zinc is supposed to be good to keep the immune system up, but it didn’t do anything to alleviate my SZ. O well. It might work for others.

It could simply mean that people with sz has a poor diet in general, but there is also the possibility that micronutrients are important to prevent sz from developing.

I had a bad diet at the time of the onset of my psychosis.

I have supplemented for a few years now. Vitamins and minerals mostly, including zink. I feel it helps, my mind goes a lot less rogue on me.

I had a horrible diet the 4 years leading up to my diagnosis. Very restrictive vegan diet. I regret going vegan, I tried doing something good for the planet and animals, but it backfired.

Zinc did not seem to help my symptoms in the past.

I can relate. I tried going vegetarian for a while, but my health got worse. It improved when I started eating omnivore again.

Vegan isn’t for everyone, and you certainly need to know a lot about nutrition to get everything the body needs and not get sick.
