Political Topics in the Forum - Your Thoughts?

Do you think we should allow political discussions in the forums? My thinking in the past that these are not likely to persuade anyone of anything (similar to religion) andjust cause stress and divisions between our community when we don’t really need that. But what are your thoughts.

Should we allow free political discussions in these forums as long as the topic is tagged as Political in nature?

I like political discussions, but I’m against it on this site. I just think that political discussions can very easily devolve into arguments and hard feelings. I’d like to see this site free of that.

It’s kinda like the elephant in the room…not being able to discuss the most fascinating American Election, possibly ever.

Again, if someone finds a political thread to be ‘triggering’ or ‘offensive’, then please simply do not click on that Header.

We have schizophrenia…we aren’t children. Nothing wrong with some lively discussion from time to time.

My 2 cents.

Although I think your argument against it can be applied to quite some stuff that is and should be allowed on the forum, perhaps you’re right that we don’t need more of it that isn’t related to schizophrenia anyway. I simply don’t care about political discussions. I barely have any political views and am also rarely impressed by the ones I stumble upon.

I’m ok with it either way, as long as folks keep the convo civil.

Some past political threads got pretty heated from what I recall, and personal insults were thrown around in some cases.

I personally don’t find political threads to be controversial but I voted No anyway.

Political threads usually stir up strong opinions and usually end up with arguments.

I think that threads promoting illicit drug use and Posts where members discourage other members from taking their meds are far more harmful than political or religious threads (as long as it remains in Unusual Beliefs)

My opinion anyway

I think the supervisors on this forum need to stop being so bossy. Whenever I post an unsavory or controversial topic or response I feel like I’m in 1600s europe and theres a witch hunt going on. You guys have heard of freedom of speech, right?

I don’t think freedom of speech works like that everywhere… Some places have some rules and guidelines and people are welcome to join if and only if they respect these. Would you hold a similar opinion when warned in or removed from places like, idk, a cinema, a churchservice, a collegeclass when saying whatever you want whenever you want it?

@eduvigis You basically told another member who is suffering with Delusions, to get off of his AP.

You also posted a Thread stating that Antipsychotic medications cause Brain damage.

Not very helpful.

xkcd had a good comic on that topic. Free speech solely means that the government can’t pass a law prohibiting you from saying something. It doesn’t apply to websites, classrooms, businesses, etc.

I find the left wing of the political spectrum is all for free speech…as long as it is speech that the left agrees with.

Thats a really simplistic way of describing those things that I did. I said if he is the kind of sz who does better off meds then getting off them might be the best move he has ever made in his life.

Before that I described the case of a guy at my schizophrenia therapy group who is off meds but is thriving. I wanted to share that with him so he could see that there are different ways of coping with sz and that all of them can be sustainable depending on the individual.

Do you think he posted the question asking whether or not he should discontinue meds with the expectation that every response would say the same thing (no he shouldnt). He wanted answers, I don’t think a full grown adult is impressionable enough to make an unsafe decision based on a single comment he read on a forum.

I feel like this should be an open forum where people with different viewpoints can freely dicuss with others. I don’t remember reading anywhere when I first accessed this forum that it is a pro or anti medication forum.

I also didn’t know certain topics are off limits. I guess its forbidden to discuss any of the drawbacks of antipsychotics. We have to talk about them positively or we are crossing a well established boundary and if we accidentally or deliberately do that then we must be censored. I guess I understand now.

You can talk about AP drawbacks…

Latuda gave me nausea.

Respiridone gave me a hard-off.

Abilify makes me a little skittish sometimes.

Meh Idc but I voted no because it’ll get out of hand…but it was a “weak” no

My sister cough cough

In another post, this member was talking about his Delusional beliefs.
Maybe you did not know this about him, but I am pretty sure that it is against the sites guidelines to tell someone else what they should do with their treatment plan, especially when they are taking meds and they are experiencing psychotic symptoms.

Whether he chooses to take meds or not should be between him and his psychiatrist - not you.

If I were a Mod here, which I am not, I would have suspended you.

I think that the Mods or Supervisors as you like to call them have been too kind with you.

I pulled a Harry burn and changed my vote to yes

Hey I didn’t compel him to do anything I just presented an example from my experience and gave him some info. He decides what he wants to do not some anonymous faceless stranger on a forum.

Im sorry if I hurt your feelings by telling that story about the guy at my therapy group. I guess I should have kept it to myself rather than talking about it on the schizophrenia forum where unsuspecting users might find that information and make unsafe decisions based on it. I’m genuinely sorry.
