Periods without Symptoms?

Is it possible to go a long period without hardly any symptoms, like 9 months?

On meds or off??? Either way, yes its possible. Although for me I need meds for this to come close to happening.

I’ll say off of medicine for me. But my doctors say that each “break” will be harder and harder to recover from over time.

It’s true. I used to be able to go a year without meds. Now I can’t miss more than 1-3 days because I relapsed multiple times and made my condition worse.

Your doctors are telling the truth here. You don’t want to let your illness go untreated, because it will get harder and harder to treat as it progresses.

I had a long healthy period, 2005-2008, but that was with the help of meds. I was able to get through the coursework of a master’s program in that time, though I was sick when I finished the last requirements for my degree in 2009.

Thanks @Jonnybegood for your input. I was just trying to get some of my thoughts on the forum today. If you don’t mind me asking, do you have SZ or SzA?

Wow! That’s a long period of time.

Ive been diagnosed with both, but SZA is my official diagnosis. I don’t see much of a difference though, but they claim I’m SZA-Bi-Polar type

Ah, got it. I’m SzA as well. Although I don’t see the manic part they always tell me about.

I got diagnosed with sz in 2003 and went into remission in 2006 and went off meds the following year. Was relatively well off meds for 5 years until 2012 when I relapsed. Been taking meds ever since.

I wonder sometimes if I can come off meds again but each time I tried it was bad results and now I know more about sz I wonder if I was ever symptom free even in my remission bcuz in that time I was very religious and thought I had a special mission and practiced excessive penances. It’s a mystery to me.

Thanks for your response. I feel very similar to you in terms of not knowing if I’ve been fine for the past 9 months.

Only on meds for me. No relapse and it’s been a year already. Last time I got off meds I relapsed within weeks and it didn’t get treated for a year, making both my negative and cognitive symptoms way more severe. However my negative and cognitive symptoms have been recovering to normal functioning. It’s happening to my friend too so it’s not unheard of. Staying as far away from psychosis as possible is key for me.

Long periods of freedom from symptoms. Although they are present every day, I am acting as if they are not there. I found going without medication to be a sinkhole.

Omg I was thinking period like how girls have periods :joy::joy: I was like dang why are you having a 9 month long period see a doctor!!!

But yeah it’s possible, especially if you’re on meds. When people find the right med combo they can be stable and symptom free for years and years. The key when this happens is to stay on your meds so you can keep that stability. If you’re off meds and haven’t had any symptoms in that long though then that’s a really good sign.

I think no symptoms at all is impossible if you include every negative symptom as well

I think i have come close really perhaps for 3 months once… but the worst was a 6 month spell off all meds where i felt good until i became psychotic for a year and then again for another year

remission is possible, 9 months symptom free is not unheard of. but with bi-polar, the depression is usually cyclical as it comes and goes. I loathe depressive episodes, gets me into a state where all I want to do is stay in bed. But if you don’t include depression, I’ve been relatively symptom free for the past 2.5 years.
