Organic causes of psychosis #3 (Parkinson's Disease)

Parkinson’s disease psychosis is a non-motor symptom of Parkinson’s disease that causes patients to experience hallucinations and/or delusions. More than half of all patients with Parkinson’s disease eventually develop symptoms over the course of their disease.
Diagnosing and treating this condition can be complex. The condition relates to both neurology (the branch of medicine that deals with the nervous system) and psychiatry (the branch of medicine that is focused on mental and behavioral health). For this reason, Parkinson’s disease psychosis is considered a neuropsychiatric condition, since it deals with mental health symptoms (hallucinations and delusions) caused by a disease of the nervous system (Parkinson’s disease).

A bit of story from me: I took a parkinson’s med because my doctor thought it was beneficial. However, it caused intense psychosis which I was struggling with intense positive symptoms.

My thoughts are with everyone with parkinson’s disease. It’s a cruel disease to have.

gosh it sounds like not only do some people with parkinsons experience psychosis but the meds for it can make it worse?

The med is a dopamine agonist. It naturally raises dopamine levels in the body, which in turn causes very bad adverse effects. Some of its side effects are delusions, paranoia, and hallucinations.
