On sobriety

im starting to enjoy it. the year has been mostly sober. now that I haven’t been drinking once a week, im finding other outlets for my pent up energy like working out 5 times a week. im thinking I will settle into a more peaceful and more content life as I age transitioning from my misspent youth to a more modest middle age. I find when I do drink it’s best that I not have more than 3 drinks a night but I wonder if im responsible enough to moderate my drinking. completely sober is probably the way to go for me. also I’ve been seeing improvements in my short term memory now that im no longer drinking. anyways big thanks to @Jonnybegood and @77nick77 for the inspiration on staying sober and best wishes to everybody else who is battling their addictions

Glad you’re enjoying your sobriety. I haven’t drank in a long time, mostly because i live with my parents and they would’t want that in their house. (They’re very anti-alcohol). When i get my own place i probably won’t drink anymore because it’s not good for my health, as i am diabetic. My problem was always drinking too much. I find it really hard to just have one or two, i have to get drunk. Guess i was a binge drinker. Anyways, keep up the good work, man. You’re doing good.

well I enjoyed my life before alcohol, and I only enjoyed life when I was drinking during my 20’s. now that I’ve stopped im finding more interests and more positive takeaways. thank disciple. I too was a binge drinker. my parents were conservative growing up but I feel like I corrupted them when I became of age. now that we no longer share a couple glasses a wine on Friday nights like we used too they are going back to not drinking as well. they are able to remain active and productive but I was definitely a problem drinker. lots of alcoholics in my family, i’d like to think this was the start of me redeeming my life to becoming something more fullfilling.

just like pot. the longer I go without it. the less I want it in the first place. now I look forward to my fruit smoothie, my salad and my ginger tea. the only things I have to still get rid of are my morning coffee and the occasional cigarette.

over the last 9 months I’ve drank twice. once in the summer when my parents were out of town and I was all alone. and then again in October with my brother before we went hiking. I think my brother may have a problem with drinking, he doesn’t drink during the week while he’s working but he likes to drink on his days off. I don’t really know what to do about it, I guess just not give in and not drink with him when he comes to town. we’re kind of similar, if we get inactive physically we kind of get into bad habits.

just a couple months ago I was still planning on erecting some grape vines and trying to produce a hobby wine for competitions but at the moment that isn’t something im thinking about. I may still grow some table grapes though if it would appreciate the landscape. I guess we’ll see what happens in april when im no longer on probation and subject to drug and alcohol screens but I think this may be the thing that kicked the habit.

when I was a kid basketball took up so much of time and energy. I was always running around and was super healthy. I started drinking at 20 and continued at my worst 4 binge sessions a week until I was 33. now 34 im getting back into watching basketball… and the workouts are bringing me just as much contentment if not more than the drinking did. also I plan on getting deeper into gardening, trying to grow some of my own veggies and herbs and i’ll probably get into aromatic houseplants and landscaping some as well. o and I just bought a nice acoustic electric guitar to occupy my time and give me a creative outlet.

That’s cool, man. It sounds like you’re finding a healthier way to live as you get older. Nothing wrong with that. I think gardening and growing grapes sounds pretty cool. My parents try to have a garden every year. It’s nice to go outside and pick your own vegetables.

yeah I’ve had some success with raised beds. weeds seem to be less of a problem in them. im planning a groundcover to put around the trailer this spring and I have some blue spruce that I need to cut down to open up more light for my garden. the blue spruce are naturalized someone put them in for privacy they don’t grow native in Indiana. lots to keep me busy

I was sober five years then I bought a bottle of wine to have in a casserole and drank the rest.

After that I thought I could have “just two drinks”no more.
I couldn’t.
I ended up throwing up in my then new boyfriends pride n joy kitchen he built himself.
After that I went sober again.
It has been two years sober now.

I was a binge drinker.
Once I started I would not stop.
I got in to a lot of trouble when I was drunk.

I also have started going to exercise five times a week.
Yoga one day , treadmill another …etc

And money to join the gym …but Xmas gifts etc
