I tried going to community college at an advanced age. It was a filler course to make up the requirements to begin real classes. I had to discontinue shortly after I started for transportation/distance/etc reasons.
There seemed to be a general view of me that I didn’t belong there, because I’m ‘way old’. And I just didn’t get along with the young people there, and their backward thinking. Seriously, why couldn’t we have just skipped the millenial generation? J/K
Are there any viable options for thirty+ people who may want to continue their education that aren’t pure scams and are at least marginally affordable? It seems that even these days they require you to stay in a certain location to learn crap.
I’m in my mid-late thirties, so not very old, just at the midpoint between youth and middle age.
I just kinda get the idea that people think I’m some sort of creeper.
EDIT: Which I am, but more in private, not openly. lol.
I really felt my age when they started talking about pro-wrestling. Naming guys I haven’t heard of. Then they ask me who my favorite wrestler is and I talk about hulk hogan and randy savage. ALthough to be fair I haven’t watched that stuff religiously since childhood.
Then they ask me how old I am. I’m not sure if it’s the way I look or the way I carry myself that makes people think I’m younger than I am.
Hey, if you want to learn about something, it will probably help you to study. I went back to school at 45. It was the hardest, yet best thing that I could have done. I don’t know what the word creeper is, so that helped.
One word of caution, make sure that you really try to figure out what will be required of you. I really got sick because after graduating and achieving my goal, I decided to go further. I think that was too much for me right now.
Late twenties here. Almost graduated from a real university. I’m heading back to community college next year and I’m kind of nervous. People can have their nose in the air. Don’t worry about community college. You can do it!
Just because they asked how old you are doesn’t mean they think you shouldn’t be there. Try night school at the community college. That’s when most older people go - after work. There are many people your age and older who are returning to school to change professions. Don’t worry! You belong there just fine.
I went back to college when I was 30. Here in California I heard that the average age of students in community colleges is around 30-35. I took two classes at a time for five years. I sat in many classes with people my age and over. The younger students did not bother me. In some classes I talked to people. In some classes I talked to only one or two people or sometimes to no one. Some people seemed to like me. I generally like people if given a chance even though I am not very talkative by nature except if I am comfortable. Overall, I liked college. Now at age 56 I am finishing up my degree with online classes.
I went back to Community College when I was 45. Just graduated a few months ago at 47. One of my classmates was in his 60s and another one was 85. I didn’t think anything of it.
Got along with the younger ones just fine. It’s really not that big of a deal.
But I got my MBA from an online school when I was in my early 30s. So that option is there but I think a degree you earn in the classroom is more valuable than one you earned online. Just my 2 cents.
Yeah! Totally! It feels good to share in class and in person with others who are interested in the same major. I took a couple of online classes when it first started in the mid-nineties. I liked the flexible schedule, but prefer to see people.
I’m 21 so I’m three years behind when it comes to the expected date I should have been in college,
At the same time it’s a necessity to get a degree, but I’m not in my own enough yet to start to go to school,
Not in sound body and mind enough to go there for me, but I have heard really people of all age are in college, you need a degree for job criteria- don’t really know anything about benefits though.
