Olanzapine

I sleep for 12 hours every night on Olanzapine. I feel like it makes me way less productive. I sleep the day away.

Also it makes me hungry all the time. I can eat a big meal and be hungry again literally 30 minutes later. I’m trying to lose weight.

I have a love/hate relationship with this drug. I love how it decreases my paranoia and delusions. Hate how much it makes me sleep and eat.

Anyone else on Olanzapine and have had success losing weight? Any tips?

Im on it and am overweight, ive tried dieting but had no luck with that. I used to go to the gym a few times a week and that helped lose some weight.

I recommend trying a med called metformin if you havent already. For each 500mg i took i lost 7 pounds and im now on the max dose of 2000mg. I just took metformin and didnt change anything and lost the weight, i dont think it works for everyone though unfortunately.

I think i’m going to only eat one meal a day and snack on small amounts of fruits/veggies before and after that one meal @Aziz

The hunger has to be ignored to an extent. Eat a amount that is reasonable each day, if you feel like eating more than this try drinking water or stock soup.

Being hungry is not dangerous, but it might feel that way somehow. A lot of psychology to it.

I lost 169 pounds back in 2019-2020 on olanzapine.

No magic, just calorie counting and exercise, though I didn’t start exercising until I’d lost my first hundred pounds. Way too hard before that.

I used a now defunct site called Sparkpeople, but places like MyFitnessPal and Cronometer work fine.

I think you saw me post elsewhere that I’m down 7 pounds toward a goal of 85 to lose. Had a 2 year breakdown and lost my figure. Using Weight Watchers and exercise this time.

Honestly, the only magic there is, is consistency. Keep making one more good decision, and they add up.

Olanzapine was fine, it was Abilify that killed me!

It isn’t for everyone but keto works. I think to do it properly though you need to exercise and get the body working on burning the fat. Exercise when it’s regular really does help the negatives too but it’s hard to get going and set yourself up and so is dieting.

I’ve lost 22kgs ( 48.4lbs) since starting low fat/low sugar then no sugar/keto. It’s not easy but you get used to it and it become easy and you can still eat pretty well…but add the exercise is my personal thing.

@rogueone , do you eat veggies? Will you ever add fruits back in to your diet?

I eat a lot of the non starch veges for sure. If you do keto got to keep the fibre up so it’s just something I do nowadays. I had a nectarine the other day and it was so good. Gawd. So much sugar though so it’s just a rare treat. I take vitamin C tablets regularly but fruit has so much sugar…I use a carb tracker so I know how much I can sneak in so it’s rare.

Ok. Please be careful @roguetwo . My former in laws did high protein/no carb diets. They both died young - one from kidney failure, the other had a heart attack. It was determined it was from several years of no carbs.

Yeah which is why I do bloodwork. There’s increasing evidence about the metabolic effects of sz and related disorders. It works for weight loss which is why I do the bloodwork and work with my shrink and my gp.

It’s different and like any diet people go stupid. I rely on information from the professionals but do it my way.

I appreciate the concern but honestly losing weight on antipsychotics is a huge thing. It’s like this dilemna I had years ago…

Yeah but aspartame gives you cancer so I avoid diet drinks. Shrink…why you worried about sugar because in the long run the extra weight is probably doing you in anyways…

That is the thing. It’s a choice you make for better health but it’s all based on current technology. I’m 53 and losing so much weight has increased my life expectancy at least in the short term. I’m fitter now than when I was 30 and drank alcohol and smoked cigs…

A reason why I post this stuff because it even helps some lose psych meds…which is the really interesting part of it all.

Hi @TheCanuk

I’ve been on Zyprexa/olanzapine since August 2018.

I used to sleep 12 hours at night and I put on 50kg from the meds.

I also have a love hate relationship with this drug. It got me out of severe psychosis in 2 weeks. I’m not paranoid anymore and don’t have hallucinations and delusions

I lost weight by taking the following meds:

For energy my endocrinologist put me on the following for my thyroid
Euthyrox 100
Euthyrox 50
Tertroxin 10mg

For insulin resistance caused by Zyprexa
Xigduo 1000mg twice daily
Trulicity 1.5mg injectable once a week

I followed this diet for a year and lost 20kg. No exercise. No sugar
Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs with like a snack bread. Coffee no sugar
Lunch: peanut butter sandwich on low GI bread with coffee no sugar
Supper: chicken wrap

I would cheat every now and then with some fries or a toasted chicken mayonnaise

Now I’m much healthier, I have more energy. I jump out of bed in the morning and shower for the day. I don’t lay around on my bed. I get up and do things

Hope these little tips can help you too.

Let me know how it goes

For the next 30kg that I need to lose, I plan on going on Mounjaro when it’s in my country which is the sister injectable to Trulicity. Dr says I’ll lose another 30kg.

The main thing with Zyprexa: increased appetite and increased insulin levels

Ive lost 15 kilos on zyprexa with one meal per day just, yeap…
I have a small snack in the evening, but i cant lose anymore now…
I cant follow a diet, so in this single meal, i allow myself everything, but i keep it also a small in quantity…
My snacks in the evening are often sugary though, am sure that if i stop those, i’ll lose even more, but i cant for now…
Yes, olanzapine is quite smashing, i cant live on low dopamine all the time, thats why my sugars too still…
You can lose, be sure!!! Hugs
