Is it possible? I want to lose weight. I don’t feel like I’m my true self with this weight on me. I’m 225 pounds. Before olanzapine I was 160 and that’s because I was pregnant. Before pregnancy I was 145 pounds.
Yes it is but I’ve found it’s hard work. I gained most of my weight on risperdal and I go up and down on zyprexa…This year I’ve been really working hard on losing weight so it’s plenty of exercise and watching what I eat. I’m doing ok with it.
I’m thinking about becoming vegan and only eating vegetables and fruit. Right now I drink two cups of coffee a day, one meal a day, and 1 snack. But I’m not losing weight.
Have you lost any significant amount of weight while on the aps? Like what’s the most amount of weight you have lost while on olanzapine?
I have lost about 8kgs lately. I put on a bit under 30kgs but I was a pretty skinny dude. My aim is to get my bmi back to a normal range. I have moved from obese to overweight. Takes some discipline so no beer and watching portion size and such…and plenty of exercise.
Olanzapine did that to me too. I gained 60 lbs. in 120 days. That’s a half a pound a day. I craved sugar and wanted to sleep a lot the whole time I was on it. I wouldn’t want to take it again, because now I weigh 235 lbs. and a similar weight gain would leave me morbidly obese.
How many pounds did you weigh before olanzapine? And how many pounds did you lose after starting olanzapine?
I’d put on most with risperdal so probably 5kgs or so with zyprexa but I’ve taken that off. At my peak I was 110kgs. times by 2.2 for pounds.
Good that you were able to lose that weight. Hopefully I can lose weight. I’m going to join a gym and do a vegan diet. This weight must go.
I take 20 mg olanzapine every other day am 215 lbs 5’10 , last year was 200 lbs took 10 mg every three days year before that was 230 took 20 mg every day. So the key is to lower your dose try to see if you can go without it, if you need it and go crazy just take 1. Dont believe psychiatrists when they say you need to take your medicine everyday that is not true at all if i take mine everyday i go crazy every day of my life whereas if i take it as needed i rarely have symptoms.
It’s possible, but it’s hard work. And harder the higher dose you take.
I’m pretty sure that it not only makes you more hungry, but it slows down the metabolism as well.
I think you are better off with 3-4 meals a day. Eating only 1 meal a day kind of impedes the metabolic process which might be why you don’t lose weight. You should eat at least 3 meals. It doesen’t have to be something big, maybe just a little fruit or a small portion of cereal.
I was 98kg’s at the most and managed to lose 15kgs at the most to 83kgs. I guess the trick is to excercise, both strenght and cardio, and also watch what you eat. You don’t need to stop eating meals, but eat mor healthy and smaller portions. It’s hard at first, but then the body adapts to getting smaller portions and hunger issues go away.
Sorry but I take my medicine everyday. Thanks for your concerns though.
exercise. not with weights. just fat burning routines like running, rope jumping, whatever makes you sweat. i was on olanzapine for 10 years or more. APs make us insuline resistant and that causes fat tissue generation, not food induced.
Thanks, that’s great advice. I know its better to eat 3 meals a day for your metabolism, but I think I’m going to stick with one meal a day. It worked for me before.
Were you able to lose weight while on olanzapine? And maintain a healthy weight and BMI?
kinda, i ate very little, i run often, but i was a bit fat the whole time. not much. could not take my eyes off the ball thou. you must sweat your fat. it gets created even if you dont eat. so you have to break it yourself. the interesting thing is that you can eat very little and still have energy to run because the body burns fat to generate energy for your body to keep working exactly because you dont eat much.
I think its possible though hard if you have bad negatives. I gained 170lb on risperidone then did a low carb low fat high protein diet and lost 30-40lb in a few months. Thats with 0 exercise staying in bed most of the time. I dropped the diet last year but I am trying to motivate myself again, I have been eating high fiber chia seeds with almond milk lately.
You can control it. Weight gain is a side effect of olanzapine, but the pill has virtually no caloric value to it. So, it does not cause weight gain by itself. It does by increasing appetite and food intake. Healthy weight is mostly nutrition then sleep and lastly exercise. While it may seem simple, in regards to what it takes to lose weight, it is very difficult. It requires a strong commitment to healthy eating patterns.
I lost 18kg on Olanzapine, but I had to lower my dose from 10mg to 5mg first. I used calorie restriction and walking and it worked until I changed medication, then I put the weight back on .
One of my favourite people is slim on olanzapine but he starts himself and exercising all the time.
He went for seven hour walks but atleast a hour or more a day and only eats one meal a day.
He is so self disciplined.
I’m so proud of him.
He is so precious.
Not stuck like all doze guys stuck …up …but beautiful.
He is sacred to me and precious.
And so loved.
