Not paying the Starbucks tax

So far this morning we have had:

3x caramel mochaccinos ($7 at Starbucks, $0.50 at home)
3x Italian sodas ($7 at Starbucks, $0.75 at home)
2 doppio espressos ($5 at Starbucks, $0.35 at home)

Cost for preparing at home: $4.45
Cost if we had purchased at Starbucks: $52.00
Total savings: $47.55 (this buys some nice, thick steaks).

Like good food? Make it at home. Dine better for pennies on the dollar.

Nice!!!

I am not much of a coffee drinker, thank goodness.
I am, however, going to give making shrimp a go. So much cheaper!!!

Starbucks overrated anyways. :coffee: :coffee:

Edit local coffee shops are cheaper and better in my area.

Our local bean shop is a bit more expensive than Starbucks actually, and not as good (I’m not sure how they manage that as the bar is set pretty low).

For those that love cold brew, it is very easy to make at home and tastes better.

Just add 1/2 cup ground coffee to a half gallon cold water. Let sit in fridge overnight. Strain the next day or leave the grounds in and strain for each cup.

I strain for each cup because the longer the grounds are in the cold brew, the stronger it gets.

I work at Starbucks and can give you any recipe lol

Between 12 - 15 hours is the optimal cold brewing time. What differentiates cold brewing from hot brewing is that it leaves the bitter-tasting compounds (chlorogenic acid lactones) in the grounds. Once you get past 15 hours they start to come out and flavour the coffee, making it increasingly bitter over time. Cold coffee brewed under 15 hours has a bright, almost sweet flavour.

(I used to be a whiskey snob so I had to learn to snob over a different beverage when I sobered up, okay? Okay.)

Edit:

That may be helpful.

Starbucks steeps their cold brew for 20 hrs

I thought they were overdoing it - shouldn’t taste bitter if done properly. Of course, SB customers are used to bitter because they over roast all of their beans and it also lets them get more cold brew using fewer grounds.

Thank you for posting this. I spend 5 dollars a day at starbucks. It’s ridiculous how much they charge.

I love making the cold foam at home with 100 ml heavy cream, 100 ml regular milk, and a pump of flavor syrup

i generally find it imprudent to start statements with things like “i’m a lawyer/chef/barista/waiter” etc, but in this case i feel like you guys can let it slide (maybe).
i’ve been a barista since 2018 and i can tell you that their coffee is terrible. it’s extremely expensive and the quality is mid- to low (not to mention their ethical practices etc…)

GUYS. buy a coffee grinder- a real one, not one to grind spices, but a machine that grinds coffee that u can adjust the grind size; buy your beans from your favorite indie coffee shop; buy coffee filters and a decanter or some kind of big mug. you will NEVER buy coffee at a chain coffee shop again.
these chains have some veeerrryy duvious ethics in relation to how they treat the people who farm and cultivate the beans. it’s the same as the chocolate industry.

im glad youve realized that it’s a way to save money, but i really want to spread this message about ethics too; it’s so important for me and we need to be conscious of how our consumption affects others.

That’s essentially how we do it too. The sweet cream is half heavy cream, lots of vanilla syrup, and 2%

You’d be disgusted knowing how much syrup theyvuse

@ozymandias i personally do not recommend the breville 2-in-1. i have one without the grinder and the grinder cant even be taken out to be cleaned (i think).
i bought one without the grinder and regretted it instantly and im still trying to sell it cause it cost BR$5,000 lol. i hate it. the pressure is awful. you end up wasting so much coffee just to regulate the machine, and in the end you realize that it waa better to go down to your local coffee and juat get a $4 espresso :woman_shrugging: just my opinion. i think for an espresso type drink at home it’s so much better to get the medium Bialetti, grind your beans, boil your water, wet the filter and blam! the bialetti is awesome. if you really get tge hang of how to use it u can start to make cappuccinos, carioquinhas, all that jazz.

another excellent product is of course, the Aeropress.

my lower cost suggestion would be:
the Hario kettle, a Hario hand grinder if youre up to it (or maybe an Encore or Cuisinart mechanical grinder if it’s too much effort- but NO spice grinders!!!), the glass Hario decanter (V60) with the plastic cone OR the regular glass Hario jug with the support for the paper filter on top.

i literally hate my Breville espresso machine so much. it is a nightmare. it barely even vaporizes milk. sigh…

The grinder can be taken apart for cleaning, not an issue. I’ve also had no problems with pressure - I’m always getting good pulls from it. None of the local espresso is better than mine. It also does a great job steaming milk. Maybe you got a lemon?

could very well be… but i hate this idea. i spent literal hours trying to program that thing.
i still think that Moka used well and a V60 are excellent choices

I also have the Breville and it works amazing for me. I think yours must be defective, or else a scam.
