Nicotine ameliorates schizophrenia cognitive deficits in mice

mice were treated with nicotine due to prior evidence that it can improve schizophrenia symptoms. Mice treated with nicotine showed a restoration of neuronal firing, demonstrating the potential clinical efficacy of this drug. Overall, this study clarified specific neuronal changes that occur in schizophrenia and provided evidence for using nicotine administration as a therapeutic strategy for schizophrenic patients.

It sure helps me

To be fair, not everyone knows what a cognitive defect is so here is a great med paper that explains it:

I gave up smoking cold turkey 13 years ago. This implies I should start vaping instead if it will help me learn better…

I vape 6mg sub ohm.

How does vaping work, i mean as measuring how much nicotine you have per day? Equivalence to number of cigarettes a 6mg sub ohm is?

You have 2 types of ecigs, above ohm and sub ohm.

In an above ohm ecig you can use juice up to 24mg.

24mg is for heavy ex smokers.

12mg is kind of the minimum to get a hit.

In the sub ohm world 6mg gives you the equivalent hit of at least 24mg in above ohm. Sub ohm produces much more clouds but uses more juice. I prefer sub ohm.

Guess this helps to explain why so many people with schizophrenia smoke, guess they may be self medicating…

Smoking improves my memory but it’s not worth the health effects or the money. Don’t start. In addition, I have more negative symptoms from smoking like a decrease in hygiene.

I’m so sensitive to cigarettes that I can get receded gums after just a few of them. I wonder why that is. It sucks because I found it so fun and relaxing. Though my poor cognition didn’t change much.

Very interesting, never imagined Nicotine could help with schizophrenia in any way!

It doesn’t help me at all not one single bit

The only way to tell is to give up and see how much it helps you then…

I don’t smoke now, so I guess you could say I gave it up. That didn’t make much sense either

Yeah, I read that in another report on nicotine was that the cognitive reliance wasn’t known as to whether the withdrawal could be measured as an effective measure against being a nicotine addict. The difficulty was that the withdrawal was possibly higher than the cognitive positive affect.

I take nicotinic acid (b3) which is what it sounds like. And like tobacco use for schizophrenics, nicotinic acid increases GABA in the brain. GABA improves cognition. I don’t know if the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor has anything to do with increasing GABA but I still suspect that nicotinic acid can show real promise in cognitive improvement - ask any niacin-popping graduate student how much better they did on their test due their dosing.
But it seems we have a problem of course if nicotine and nicotine derivatives are beneficial to the schizophrenic brain. I get my liver checked a lot and I’d hate to kill myself with nicotinic acid but it also seems that the management of this illness leads us to dangerous places, anyway.
