Myths that you used to believe

Thought I would make this thread for people to list “facts” that they used to believe were true but no longer do.

Here is a disproven “fact” that I not that long ago learned was false:

Myth: Dogs see only in black and white.

Not true at all it turns out. Apparently they see yellow and blue.

I heard and believed the story that “waited for this moment” by phil collins was about him witnessing someone drowning at the hand of someone he knew but the killer didn’t know phil saw him drown him and then invited him to a front row seat to sing the song to the killer…hahahahahahaha…oh man, was I gullible.

Salt was the harmless combination of two harmful chemicals. Ask anyone with high blood pressure and you find out otherwise.

I recently learned that many people believe babies are unaffected by trauma because they do not remember it.

Then I read that babies are profoundly affected by trauma because they process it in their lower brain because their upper brain is not yet developed. This is what they call the “lizard brain” which I think is the brain stem and the cerebellum. It’s the foundation on which our cognitive and emotional development is built, the health of which determines the development of higher brain functions. This is why traumatized infants can later present with emotional problems and learning disabilities.

Finding out that so many people believe babies are immune to trauma was so disturbing that it stuck with me.

I thought you can’t treat mental illness and crazy ppl. I always thought they lock them in a hospital away from society forever.

When I was a kid, I was told by another kid that if you eat watermelon seeds, a watermelon will grow inside your belly. I believed it for a few years, until I was old enough to realize that that is just nonsense.
