My therapist is frustrated

It might be helpful to tell the therapist about the things that are causing you more problems in your day to day life and stop exploring trauma for a little while. They should be willing to help.

If they aren’t I recommend looking for a new therapist that can help you with things you actually want to work on. You may have simply outgrown this therapist.

I’ve have been in the same situation, where I just didn’t have anything to say and wasn’t feeling anything in particular. You might want to lengthen the visits to maybe once a month, you might have more to say.

You never have to discuss the past if you have a good therapist. If that’s all they want to talk about, I’d look for another, because they aren’t well rounded.

I asked my therapist some months ago why she never tries to make me talk about my past. She said that I am a future oriented individual.

Seconded. My therapist actually stopped me from talking about my past until like seven years in. She said there was nothing to gain from continually reopening the same wound every week. She was more interested in helping me to stay grounded in the present.

@Natron i did ask her to go to biweekly and she said her approach doesn’t work as well if we’re not meeting at least once a week.

@anon4362788 @Ninjastar yeah she flat out told me if I am not wanting to talk about the past that she can’t bend her approach to suit my needs. I found that kind of weird. Like you’re a therapist, not everyone responds to the same approach, and to be honest I wasn’t having any issues with her approach, I thought I was making a lot of progress so her frustrating with that caught me way off guard . I feel like she’s actually making it more complicated than it needs to be

Having a degree in something doesn’t make someone good at knowing how to use everything they learned.

Yeah that would get old.

That is hard to hear, but it is good of her to be up front about it. I had to go through several therapists before I clicked with my current one. Different therapy approaches are like different specialties. You wouldn’t see an eye doctor for knee pain, and you wouldn’t see a therapist who focuses on processing the past if your main issue is difficulty living in the present.
