My puppy has to undergo surgery soon

My puppy is getting neutered and undergoing Cryptorchadism surgery early next week.
His vet says that I will have to give him sedatives for at least a week.
He will need to rest for several days.
The issue is that he has an undescended testicle so the neutering surgery is a bit more complex.

Poor baby

I hope he will be alright

Yes they say he will need a cone
I’m going to ask them if they will be providing us with one

Thanks @irrelevant

Do you know if the cone has to be on him all day and night long? @irrelevant

Even when he sleeps?

Obviously I take it off him when he’s eating and drinking

i left the cone on mine all the time except when eating and drinking. and he may be able to drink with it on hopefully. mine can. if u wanna give him a break from it u can take it off as long as u are sitting right there watching him. or else he might be too quick and wake up from a nap and start ripping out stitches. my moms dog did that after being spayed once.

I’ve always wondered why there are 2 different words for “sterilize” according to the animal’s sex? To spay / to neuter. Maybe someone could explain to me in layman’s terms? Thanks!

I don’t know @Andrey
Yeah seems a bit odd

I think you need to keep the cone on at all times to prevent your puppy from licking the wound.

I suppose you could remove the cone for brief periods if you are right there close to your puppy and can watch him to make sure he doesnt lick.

Another side benefit of the cone is that it may help reduce your puppy trying to be too active since it is difficult to run or jump with a cone on.

I have used one of those dog collars with the plastic quick release type clasp (rather than a collar with a traditional buckle closure) together with the cone. The collar is threaded through the plastic loops in the cone to keep it on the puppy. The quick release type collar closure is handy if you are going to be taking the cone on and off.

I hope this helps. I hope your puppy has a speedy recovery after surgery.

You are a good dog and cat dad @Wave Your pets are lucky to have you looking out for them.

I know man.
Was just trying to lighten up the mood a bit. Maybe divert @Wave 's attention, he’s obviously super stressed out for his pup.
