That I’m not autistic because I have relationships with people.
Is it a psychiatrist or therapist who diagnose autism?
I was diagnosed by someone that specializes in autism and assessed me. So I believe that person over a therapist I’ve seen for a couple months. Both have phds though
I just think that’s ridiculous. Autistic people can have relationships including boyfriends and girlfriends
I’d say do your own research and try and figure it out on your own. Maybe your mild autism or maybe it’s part of your schizophrenia. You can educate yourself as much as possible and figure out where you think you are on the spectrum. I haven’t learned much about myself from my doctors ir therapist as far as my condition goes. I’ve gotten some stuff here and there but most of my knowledge on the subject has come from researching and talking to other schizophrenics.
I’ve been diagnosed by a professional that specializes in autism.
Maybe you are idk, but you could still find out for yourself. Do you have a therapist to talk to this about?
I’m confused, are you reading the posts? The thread name is about my therapist
Also I have done extensive research when I was diagnosed, and I absolutely agree with it, i was just posting this because of how ridiculous it is to say autistic people can’t have relationships.
A PhD is a research qualification. It doesn’t make you a clinical psychologist with experience in making diagnoses.
What are the exact qualifications of this ‘therapist’?
It says “phd hspp” after his name. Both people are equally qualified as psychologists but the guy that assessed me has over 20 years of experience working with autism, including assessing adults, and has a bunch of other autism related jobs, so I feel like he’d know better than someone that has never specialized in autism
Okay. Maybe the new therapist is just surprised that you’re that functional.
I assume you’re probably on the mild side of the spectrum.
I know it takes a long assessment of your youth to come up with the diagnosis. So I would trust the extensive assessment.
It is good that you are not. I wouldbe relieved to know that I don’t have a diagnosis.
@TheFountainPen yeah my social skills is at the mild end but my sensory needs were put at level 2
@angledangle i actually am autistic though, read comments for context
Also diagnosis or not I clearly struggle with social skills/cues, eye contact, and sensory stuff, to say the least
That’s inaccurate. Autistic people are on a spectrum and some can make friends
There’s a whole show on Netflix called Love on the Spectrum … so yeah what your new therapist said is not true
I also know people who were diagnosed autistic… one is in a relationship and the other have been in relationships before.
