Autism+SZ?

Is it possible to have both?

I think I have autism+SZ with negative symptoms and I am refusing help because of autism.
In my country where I lived my first 10 years there is no psychiatrist or psychologist so I couldn’t be diagnosed. Mental illness was thought to be caused by god. I don’t believe in this anymore because I now live in Canada.

Anyone here with autism and SZ with negative symptoms? Are you able to work and have friends?

The short answer is you just lack social skills because you have schizophrenia.

Oh I see you’re right because my psychiatrist here in Canada only said I have SZ with negative symptoms, no autism.

A lot of people do it, you see it on here all the time. Take an overview and look if you act differently or you just have impacted social skills and it is pretty easy to take a guess. A lot of people seem to cling on to it and say things like they had it when they were young or they took an online test and stuff, but it is pretty obvious when the person never really says something out of the ordinary.

Keep in mind autism is on a spectrum. I am diagnosed with autism at age 29 after my schizophrenia diagnosis by a psychologist and psychiatrist. As you know, I work. However, I have no social life. There is only one best friend who would occasionally check on me.

I have been given an autism assessment by the psychologist as she suspects I have it.

If I was to be diagnosed with autism I hope my schizophrenia was mis-diagnosed and they can treat me for autism and not SZ.

I read that autism people can have psychosis so it would not be unreasonable to ask them to question my original diagnosis

You have sz symptoms though don’t you? Like withdrawing from people.

Autism symptoms start at age 6 months so that’s the difference between it and SZ.
Me I had a social life before my SZ.
SZ is usually diagnosed much later in life than autism.

I am leaving it to the assessment people to deal with, as I am not sure

The psychologist thinks I need to do it. I am just following her guidance as she says either way it helps her treat me properly.

I used to be a very awkward child. I couldn’t function at school and was abused.

My mom and I suspect autism but we’re not certain.

You could ask your pdoc for clarity on the psychosis sz thing, that way you would be better prepared for dealing with people who assess you.

I keep getting told the Schizophrenia is not under question by the CMHT

However, the psychologist sent me to the national autistic society website and that says they can review diagnoses like schizophrenia

I also spoke to an OT from the ASD assessment people, and he said sometimes they do change a diagnosis like SZ to ASD

Any chance that I can get to have my diagnosis verified or changed I will take, as they have just left it for years and only now they seem to be doing things differently

Will see what happens.

Either way I need to take the anti-psychotics, as I have tried to come off these several times and it ends up with me being put in the hospital

Yeah it is possible to get both. People like you and squirrel that were diagnosed as a child, theres not much doubt to it. But just saying there is what, a 100 regular members on here, so statistically there should be about 2 people, but I see loads of people coming on here that are clearly not autistic. I keep trying to reassure some people, but it is like you could give them all the evidence in the world and not get through.

In Canada a psychologist can’t prescribe meds or diagnose mental illness, only psychiatrists.

I would talk about it to a psychiatrist rather than trusting a psychologist not trained in medicine.

They can’t here either

The Autism diagnosis is made by a special service for neurodevelopment disorders

I am so happy that I am taking my meds.
I refused treatment and suffered for many years because mental illness is a sin and very badly viewed in my natal country where I lived my first 10 years. Mental illness doesn’t exist in my country, there is no psychiatrists or psychologists. They say that mental illness comes from god and nothing can be done.

Not all mental illnesses, some mental illnesses can be improved with meds.

@rbert you are new, but religion is a banned topic. This includes anti religious talk. Please refer to the following and discontinue the religion content of your posts.

We don’t allow religious discussions on this site. This for a couple of reasons. First, it tends to cause arguments, because for some reason people can’t seem to just respect each other’s different religious beliefs. Second, many folks suffer from religious delusions. It is one of the top three topics of delusion, alongside aliens and government conspiracies. We don’t allow discussions on those topics, either. Third, there are many members here who were subjected to exorcisms by family members who, sadly, did not understand their illness. Those memories can be very traumatic for those individuals, and they don’t need to be reminded of them.

I hope you can understand, and help keep this a safe place for everyone. Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:
