Idk what to do. I live in a shed house. Its small. I have 2 dogs and one started attacking the other dog a few months ago. I have to keep them seperate. Now she has started getting mildly aggressive with me. Today she lunged at me 2 times. She put her teeth on my hand but didnt bite down. She growled at me when i told her to scoot over on the couch
My only advice would be to check her thyroid levels. When/if you can afford it. My dog got aggressive with other dogs for no reason but with meds she got better as she has hypothyroidism.
I see if i can next time she needs to go to the vet. I am thinking for now the only solution i can do right away is to fortify the backyard and make it safe. It connects to the bedroom and i can keep her separate while allowing her the distraction of the outdoors. Maybe she will feel better with more play time. Im gonna fix the yard tuesday.
The sad part is she likes to sleep with me and the other dog but i just cant trust her not to attack the other dog in the night and its putting me on edge all night so i think im gonna have to have her sleep alone. But idk if that will make her worse if she feels left out.
Give them both attention at the same time and feed them together, reduce the need for them to compete for anything, time, attention, food, space. If they feel competitive, one will be more aggressive is my experience with my dogs.
I hope you figure out what is making one aggressive.
if i were to feed them together it would be an instant fight. i cant even reach for her bowl until shes ready without her nipping at me. but i will try to give her more attention. she may be jealous.
Yeah, they do get jealous, we got one for my older dog and he became super depressed for 6 months but with lots of attention, he finally accepted the new one. We waited too long and he liked being number one.
They all have such different personalities.
My two came from the same liter and they got alone pretty fine until probably the last 6 months. They used to get in tiny fights, rarely any injuries. But that changed.
Maybe buy a book of Cesar Millan?
A long time ago I sometimes watched his show and he always had a solution!
Aggressiveness could be related to pain in some way. Maybe you should consider taking to the vet. My sis had a dog who had nail/claw issues of some kind if I remember correctly and would get snarly if you tried to touch them or have the vet work on them. Perhaps your dog could be in pain of some kind if they are suddenly getting aggressive when moved or touched?
What breed is the aggressive dog? I highly recommend getting an in-home trainer. It’s really crucial to get this sorted out asap.
Rule out any underlying health concerns that might be causing her/him to be aggressive
Also make sure that your dog is getting plenty of exercise.
If you can afford it you may want to hire a professional trainer or dog behaviorist
We had to have our last dog put down when it became aggressive toward our daughter and bit her.
this is partially the reason for the escalation. she has a very small cut on the pad of her foot. its not bad. shes not limping or anything. but she is trying to lick it all day. and it seems to have put her in a bad mood. other than that tho it;s a resource gaurding issue. she thinks she owns the couch, she thinks she owns the bed, she thinks she is the boss of everything.
german shepherd mix
good idea. ill look into getting one in a week or so
Ok. German Shepherds are highly intelligent. She needs to be exercised 3 times a day, plus she needs daily mental challenges (training activities). If she’s bored, she’ll get into trouble.
ok ill def fortify the yard then and start letting her go out more. she loves to be outside but i have been keeping her in mostly because i have some black widows under the house. i need to skirt my house shed with plywood, and spray spider killer under there. and knock down webs. then she can spend more time outside.
my mom said we can do all that tomorrow. so i will get it done quick for her.
Put on a muzzle. Then train with treats.
The first thing you need to do is visit a vet to see if there’s any underlying issues. I had a huge American Bulldog/Lab mix who started becoming aggressive at the dog park and I had to start muzzling him, and it turned out that he had lymphoma cancer that had moved into his brain. I couldn’t afford doggy chemo and had to put him down.
