So, some of you know I’ve been having a lot of problems recently. My doctor is recommending that I get ECT (electroconvulsive therapy). I’m a little scared about the anasthesia part of it, but I’m desperate at this point. He said it’s a very good treatment. I’ll still have to take antipsychotics along with the ECT in order to maintain, which I’m fine with. I’ve never had to be put under anesthesia before.
Sounds like a good plan.
I had anesthesia when i got my gall bladder out. It’s no big deal. It’s like you just go to sleep and wake up and the procedure’s over with in the blink of an eye. I’ve never had ECT before. Are you nervous about it or just the anesthesia? Hope it goes well for you.
I’m mainly concerned about the anesthesia. But the ECT is a little scary too. There’s some chance of memory loss.
But it’s mainly the anasthesia. I’m scared of not waking up.
I think the memory loss is short term and temporary. And like i said, the anesthesia is no big deal. Don’t sweat it. Maybe this will be the breakthrough that you need.
It goes fast. They put you to sleep. Induce a seizure and then you wake up.
Yes I had 12 sessions. I don’t have an opinion on it good or bad.
Well thanks for your honesty! I’m a little scared of getting it done, but it’ll be a while before I get the referrals and everything set up. Probably at least a few weeks.
Good luck @Dreamer, I think you will be fine.
ECT can be a lifesaver in cases of severe, intractable depression. Thousands of people are put under general anesthesia everyday. If you want to relieve your anxiety, hire a licensed anesthesiologist and in the meantime take slow, deep breaths.
I understand your worry I may have to have surgery on my shoulder and the thought of being put to sleep scares me too.
