Yesterday my car broke down. The engine turns on, and it goes sometimes, but then it just stops moving. It’s a strange problem I think…I don’t know a thing about cars.
I had to wait two hours for a tow truck to come and bring it to my mechanic. My mechanic was closed by that point.
I’m really anxious now. It’s being looked at by the mechanic this morning, I hope nothing really bad is wrong with it. I don’t have enough money to fix a big problem. I’m so nervous.
They generally ring and tell you if it’s a big problem and ask if you want to go ahead with fixing it before doing it. Same goes for other things other then what you brought it in for like if it needs new tires, brakes need fixing etc. Put your foot down and ask questions if they do push things like that though. Like getting an estimate of how long you can drive before needing to get those fixed. Which also gives you time to put money aside for it.
I do not have an automobile. These new cars have all kinds of electrical things and sometimes fixing these can be expensive. I know that there in America you need an auto to go to places because distances are long and the public transportation is not so good unless you live inside big cities such as Washington D,C. where you can use subways quite well. Used to do this when I visited Washington D.C. during my American stay. Personally I like metros/subways and I have used these in big cities such as London, Moscow, Leningrad, New York, Paris, Barcelona, Washington D.C. and elsewhere. I am living now in a little town and we have a good public transportation, but I prefer riding my bicycle, although now I need to fix those breaks so that it is safe to ride. I know some peope who walk in the town and sometimes use local buses. I hope you get your car fixed.
I live in a suburb of New York City. There is some public transportation, but really I need a car to get around. I don’t feel safe on public transportation anyways. I wish I could bike places or walk places. When I studied abroad in South Africa I walked everywhere, or took a taxibus. I loved that.
The mechanic just called and said he’s been driving it all morning and it hasn’t done anything to suggest there’s a problem, but he’ll keep driving it to make sure.
From what you described, it sounds like the transmission is shifting into neutral, which could either be a little problem or a really big one. It could just be that the shifter detent is worn, and it slips from Drive to neutral. Or it could be low on transmission fluid. Those are relatively easy fixes, but it could also be major mechanical problems that cost a lot to fix. I hope it’s something simple!
Reminds me when my car broke down in Miami after I had stayed 1.5 years in auto already, I was on one university campus and my car did not start, it was already an evening and I planned to stay in my auto on the campus, but the campus police thought differently and gave me 20 dollars and told me to stay elsewhere over the night and so I did with my black cat and we slept on one lawn in North Miami, but when in the morning my car was towned to a car repair place they did not find anything wrong in it and it worked well. The campus police was actually very nice by giving me that 20 dollars.
