My A1C today is 5.9, down from 6.2. The only thing that changed was I switched from Zyprexa to Abilify. Below 5.7 is normal, 5.7 - 6.4 prediabetes, 6.5 - up diabetes. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2011 with an A1C of 6.7. I was taking Zyprexa at the time. I take Glipizide a diabetes medication.
Abilify had the opposite effect for me. I have to take metformin now.
Sorry to hear that.
Yea Zyprexa is the worst for diabetes, cholesterol and liver health. My Dr took me off it, I developped prediabetes, high cholesterol, fatty liver and higher liver enzymes on it.
I actually maintained my weight on Zyprexa but my thyroid levels were a bit off and my fasting blood glucose levels rose to above 160
160 is pretty high, though I guess it could be worse. When I was diagnosed in 2011 my fasting blood sugar was 137.
Yeah I guess Zyprexa raised it that high.
But I was only on Zyprexa for a month.
I’m on Risperdal now and my diabetes is manageable.
On Abilify I had near normal numbers.
Been on zyprexa for over 10 years. It’s easy to gain weight. I have a theory that the weight gain is related to your body using hunger as way to combat the effects of the medication. Like a protection mechanism. If you have little food in the system the drugs will have a more heavy impact. But if you eat you reduce the effect of the drugs.
This is probably not true for all ap’s, but I think it is for zyprexa.
Are your blood sugar levels high on Zyprexa @Mr_Hope?
Last time I checked with the doc it was within normal range, but it’s been a few years. But I’ve only been doing 5mg’s for the last few years, so it is easier to keep a better weight now, and I feel ok.
