Honestly, it has helped me understand myself on another level but I’m not sure what other help it will get me. Hopefully reasonable adjustments in the workplace (here’s hoping). I got a 28 page report with some suggestions and a book recommendation about masking.
I’ve been open with my employers about my autism (and sz) diagnosis, and I feel like people are much more accepting today. Not an absolute guarantee that they will be, but that’s just what I’ve found so far.
I’ve been forthright with both diagnosis’ before I get a job, and my bosses at all the places I’ve worked at have been accommodating. I hope you find the same equal treatment.
I can relate to people here don’t get me wrong, but I relate more with people who have autism , not just through interacting but through watching videos of people who have it.
Thank you, I’m glad you found a role and the right support in your job. I hope I can find something similar.
There are lots of us here with autism too it was a relief when I got my diagnosis but I struggled for years to fully accept it
I don’t struggle with the autism diagnosis, but for years I have struggled with accepting the sz dx. I think I even have the docs baffled. The last doc I saw said I needed to go for the autism assessed after which they will review the sz diagnosis so I’m going to contact them now to see this consultant again.
Yeah that happens with complex symptom pictures. It took me ten years of seeing drs to really get diagnosed properly .
I think its cos im complaint I don’t get psychotic symptoms. I am going on year 4 of no psychosis and I have had two episodes in 14 years.
Some people can fully recover from sz. I’ve had more episodes than I can count
I don’t think I will ever go off meds unfortunately, but I strongly suspect I don’t have sz. you can say it’s denial if you want and I fully accept I might be wrong. but I have doubts.
Doesn’t matter much what you call it right?
I need a proper diagnosis especially for insurance purposes when I’m traveling etc. other than that it doesn’t matter at all because the psychosis rarely causes me issues.
I’m confused how would a different diagnosis affect travel?
When I go travel, I need to state my diagnosis when I take out insurance. It also asks how many times it has led me to hospital in the past 2-3 years or so. it can cause insurance to go up or down or they can outright deny me insurance…
When I came out of hospital and I was to travel about a year later, I had to declare everything and I had a hard time finding someone who would insure me.
Oh wow that’s just discrimination. I wish that weren’t a thing where you live.
It’s one of the reasons why I stay in Europe. That way I’ve got health insurance coverage.
did you have to apply for a gihic card?
I have a European Health Insurance Card which covers most of Europe and some countries outside like Egypt, the UK,… You don’t have to pay extra for it.
I thought they got rid of EHIC I had to apply for a GIHIC… it doesn’t cover all of Europe but I still take out insurance wherever I go. just to be safe.
Okay. Maybe because of Brexit. In Belgium it still exists.
I don’t take extra insurance because most travel insurance won’t cover pre-existing conditions or psychiatric conditions. At least not insurance companies from Belgium.
Edit: the EHIC from Belgium also covers Australia if I ever want to travel that far.
