To me so many singers now, male or female, have a very similar vocal sound . A sound that’s affected rather than natural. It could be an ‘age’ thing.

Agreed @firemonkey, but I don’t think that’s us getting old-- it’s just another facet of technology.
They have this thing called autotune which basically equalizes a singer’s voice and improves pitch and tone and all that jazz. It can basically turn a horrible singer into a pretty decent one.
Lots of overproduction in the popular music industry today.

There’s still good music out there, but you kinda have to dig through that crap layer of commercialized stuff first.

Its called pitch correction. It means that technology has been used to modify the note sung to be exactly “perfect”. It is really normal for music on the radio to be completely pitch corrected. It sounds really unnatrual to anyone with a good ear. As a musician I can’t stand the sound of it. So consider your ears educated.
I don’t mind if its used very sparingly to correct a couple of errors, but even then, they could alternatively just do another take.
We’re at a point with music technology that you no longer need to play in time or in tune to be able to make a record.

I don’t listen to a lot of female-sung music, because I don’t generally like songs about clubbing or relationships. The few that I have on my iphone are from bands like Evanescence and Grouplove who sing about different or even abstract subjects.
If you listen to underground music and not main stream you will find amazing talent in any genre, YouTube and sound cloud have many artists with real unique talent that don’t just fit the mold of child actor turned popstar
