Has anyone here tried a supplement called Mulberry Leaf? It is apparently an alternative treatment for schizophrenia and is an anti dopaminergenic similar to anti-psychotic medication. I have a bottle but I haven’t tried it yet, it sounds a little scary.
I mentioned it a while ago on this site. I haven’t properly tried it because I take other things. But it did no harm.
Talk with your doctor and use an interactions checker before using it. It can interact with certain antipsychotics and diabetes medication.
Yes @Green mentioned this last year and noted the study was not in humans
He also flagged some interesting research …“The results suggest that the methanolic extract of Morus alba L. possesses antidopaminergic activity.”
@GentleSoul have you tried Alba - kinda remember reading that?
It is stated that Mulberry Leaf is Traditional Chinese Medicine - I wonder if @green5 or @anon35453467 may know people that have used this successfully?
What gets me is that it also has nootropic qualities (referenced in examine link below) .
“… is a PDE4 inhibitor… and enhances gaba neurotransmitters and induces Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) …evidence of enhanced memory in rats…”
How can something be antidopaminergic AND make your brain smarter?
I think for the good of the sz community this Mulberry (alba) thingy needs a full and free debate between @everhopeful and @twinklestars no holds barred) with @Green as moderator (seeing he started this off) and then we vote on the winner - what do you say @TheBest? @far_cry0 ?
Anyway I am ordering some alba to test it out ! - wonder if it stacks well with cinnamon tea?
@unaventures I’m not aware of Mulberry Leaf as a TCM but the Mulberry trees do grow in China to feed silkworms.
Sometimes debate brings out the best of things @unaventures. I’m all about people doing whatever works for themselves.
I take a mulberry extract. It helps me, but I take quite a bit of it and don’t use it every day.
Thanks Xade.
How much do you take? And what kind of effects does it give you - like do you feel less delusional AND notice you can remember better or process information better?
Yes. I learn alot faster when I read good debates - specially the few that @twinklestars and @everhopeful have had - which are entertaining to read and are grounded in evidence based research.
@anon35453467 … Mate you are missing out!
If I knew Chinese I would be studying TCM !
Heres the info on the Chinese med “SANG BAI PI”
Haha…I thought wouldn’t it be funny if there were Chinese meds to eat Silkworms and there ARE !!!
Looks Pretty legitimate too …
A scientific review of Silkworm pupae extract for Alzheimer’s
Also for Autism !
And also for inflammation and the immune system …
Given the amazing action of Mulberry as both a anti psychotic and a Nootropic and the scientific studies linking it to the immune system, anti inflammation and possible treatment for Autism and Alzheimer’s I would be willing to take a small bet that there must also be some Chinese meds for mental illness using both Mulberry and Silkworm extract…maybe along with some of the Chinese adaptogenic herbs. I will search further …
If you come across any information /clues please share.
BTW is there a Chinese version of ‘Pubmed’ where scientific articles are published?
I take a teaspoon of an extract powder I get. Except it’s the actual mulberries, not the leaf. I haven’t tried the leaf. It recommends to take 1/3 of a teaspoon but I don’t notice any side effects from taking more. It’s basically like eating a lot of mulberries which you can find at health food stores. I used to just buy the actual mulberries and eat a handful which helped as well.
EDIT: It helps with my positive symptoms and mood.
I used to feed it to my silkworms but I never thought about eating it
You have silkworms? How cool!
I had them in a box with these leaves u speak about. They eat this leaves so fast it was unbelievable.
It was long ago when I was 6 or 7
Mulberry leaf is good for you.
Thank you and @dmdar for the heads up on this. I have ordered it - I am fascinated that the research shows that it has both anti psychotic and nootropic qualities. A combo made in heaven - if that bears out even slighly.
Cheers.
Well if you still had those silkworms I would be borrowing some off you to see if I can replicate the experiment below. Nothing like helping drunk mice…purely in the interests of science you understand.
I think it’s stopping my mind reading. It’s good stuff.
