I’m currently on 150mg Effexor (switching to Wellbutrin) and my low mood is very much improved, but I’ve been getting these random, awful depressive mood swings.
I want to try a mood stabilizer in addition to my anti-depressant, but my social worker says that mood stabilizer are generally prescribed to treat manic mood swings, not depressive ones.
Has anyone here tried a mood stabiliser for depression? Any thoughts on this?
I’m on lamictal for my depressive mood swings. I used to get these weeks long crushing depression, just hopelessness every day. Haven’t had one since starting it.
I also take Zoloft with Lamotrigine as well as Saphris. The Lamotrigine works well for my outburst kind of mood swings, but it doesn’t keep me from depression or mania. I’m just not grumpy/yelling at everyone over stupid stuff and/or throwing temper tantrums. I still have risky behavior (spending), and right now, I’m severely depressed.
Effexor is great for my depression but I take 300 mgs. I get side effects particularly IBS type symptoms but it works for me.
I’m not adverse to you trying a mood stabilizer. I am no expert but I’d be asking a shrink. The good ones get an idea of what is up with certain people. It really is an art.
I take Lamotrigine for my depression. The pdocs didn’t want to put me on an antidepressant because of my tendency to have high moods. It does help to take the edge off my depression. I also was given olanzapine in a low dose (5mg) to help not only with psychosis but with depression
