Does anyone take a mood stabilizer?

I’ve been getting mood swings and want to know if I should ask my psychiatrist for a mood stabilizer. What do they feel like? Are you more calm? Are they sedating like antipsychotics? I don’t know if I should ask for one or add Seroquel or Zyprexa to my meds since I didn’t have any mood swings when I took those meds. Any feedback is appreciated!

I took some mood stabilizers. I took Neuronton, Depakote, Topamax, and Latuda. Latuda which originally was just an antipsychotic medicine worked but I hated being so flat. I got off because of akithisia and psychosis. Yes, it’s hard to believe but Latuda caused psychotic paranoia at times. But it may be different for you, it may be a wonder drug. I have had no extreme highs since going off. I am now on only two meds: an antidepressant and an antipsychotic. And the doses are low. I am getting old, I’m 53. I suffered many years extreme hunger and sleepiness and I am relieved to no longer have those problems. It seemed like an extraordinary long time.

I definitely don’t want akathisia but I’m willing to try whatever my psychiatrists prescribe but I’d prefer not to take something that needs regular blood tests.

If you don’t want blood tests then I suggest you speak to your doctor about Lamictal

I’m on two different mood stabilizers, Depakote and Lamictal

They both work great

That’s good to know.

Depakote works great on my manic and mixed episodes and Lamictal works primarily for my depressive episodes but Lamictal at higher doses works pretty well on mania as well

Thanks for the info @Wave. It’s the depression I get that I hate the most.
