Mom visited me and told me to open curtains

I like the darkness and I get stressed when the lights are on. Mom wanted me to open all curtains and saying it’s wierd to live in darkness. I disagree with her. Why cant I enjoy the darkness? I feel like Im being monitored so it helps me feel secure when the lights are off and it’s dark

She is probably trying to get you some vitamin D in your life. If you never have exposure to the sun, you might be deficient, and that can compound mental illness symptoms. I do the same thing to my kid when he gets the winter blues.

Most people also feel better when they see the sun and the outdoors, just because they enjoy it. That clearly doesn’t apply here, but it is a general rule of thumb for me that if I spend too much time indoors I get grumpy.

I hear you buddy. I live in the dark as well. All the windows have been blacked out for years. I have alexa lights that can change the room to green/red whatever anyway.

For me its the paranoia. Daft as it sounds cos i live on the top floor of a block of flats, but i dont like people “seeing in”. Ive got CCTV anyway to see who is at the communal front door.

Its a “safety” thing aint it. Im with you mate - i prefer the dark too, probably why im looking forward to winter!

It comes in a bottle. Take a few of those and turn off the lights, please. They hurt my eyes.

Used to be me i was like that

Sunlight is good for you. But maybe you can wear sunglasses, even if you’re indoors with the blinds/curtains open? That way, you’ll get the sunshine benefits without bothering your eyes too much?

EDIT: Just re-read the end of your post. Feeling secure in the darkness. Maybe you can open the blinds for short periods? Not all day. Just for an hour or so?

Your Mom is just trying to help you.
Living in darkness is not healthy, mentally and physically.

Open the curtains for crying out loud, at least for a couple of hours.

I don’t mind daylight but in the evening I sit in darkness as I don’t like artificial lights

My great room curtains are closed and so are my bedroom curtains. I feel like the neighbors can see into my house and/or I have to block them out - even though I know the neighbors can’t see in my house. My pdoc knows about this. She rates my paranoia at a 2. I can’t remember if that’s on a scale of 1-5 or 1-10.

It’s fine. Anyway I get it. I have the curtains open when I have company over.

I feel the same. Especially with my nosy neighbors.
