Misrepresenting MI in the media

II am so sick of hearing of cases of MI misrepresented in the media. Why can’t news outlets do just a little bit of research before blaming everything on bp/sz/depression and so on? It sickens me!

Sorry for the rant. Just saw a news article where bp was apparently a contributing factor in a guy randomly wandering the streets not knowing where he was or how he got there. Yeah, because people with bp tend to randomly wander the streets because of their disorder.

You can’t expect media to do researches or to write educative articles/videos, normies would never read/watch this sort of things…

If I had studied journalism instead of English Lit, my morals would have required me to do my homework.

If you have to wait to do your homework you would be a historian.

Journalists have to rush a clickbait article to sell.

Homework is important, darn it! A journalist should be well-rounded, kind of like that guy on Pawn Stars who seems to know everything.

Homework… haha, they just google things and write only the rumors or the interpretation of the story that sounds shocking and sensational.

Anyone can write anything on the internet. They are just getting their misinformation from someone else’s misinformation. I miss the days of real research.

The news here every time there is a murder they ask if the person was mentally ill. A lot of time they are so I don’t know what to think.

Yeah, but according to NAMI, 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness, and nearly 1 in 25 adults live with a serious mental illness. I imagine that the 99% of people have been affected by depression (for example) in some way. They have either had it, had a family member or friend with it, or otherwise known someone who had it. MI is not uncommon. So naturally, if a murder occurs, someone who did it might have a mental illness. The media should hype up the illnesses to be something they aren’t, and media is a huge contributor to the spreading of misinformation on MI.

Some folks still believe if it makes the news, it must be true. Cough, cough…

Yeah, so then I guess it’s up to us to educate them folks that arent really intrested in the truth, by presenting the facts in a newsworthy way.

Media definitely likes making us look bad

Normal people are the ones committing the murders.

Yeah it’s a bunch of horse doo doo how the media portrays people with MI.

Some movies that come out are kind of bad at times too. In regards to how the MI are portrayed.

What can we do? I suppose try and remain positive and educate the public about MI and hope for the best.

But I don’t think the responsibility should rest just on our shoulders.

I think the education system, politicians, media, and on - down the line, need to “step up to the plate” and also do their part in defending the rights of the vulnerable.

What’s sad is that we can’t always stand up for ourselves or explain what is going on, and some of us are thrown in prison when what we really need is hospitalization. The media just contributes to the whole mess.
