They usually only do stories on people that have done bad things, rarely do you see a successful story about a SZ person
Those in the news are mainly unmedicated and sought no medical help, IMO.
I agree with Mountainman and Zoom on this. It seems that sz’s only make the news when something terrible happens.
However if I recall correctly I think I have found some articles on Elyn Saks on some NY newspapers.
Yeah found one: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/27/opinion/sunday/schizophrenic-not-stupid.html
I agree. In my country, all you ever hear about are the ones who went off their meds and wound up stabbing social workers or murdering their entire family with an axe because “the demons told them to”.
My (former) friend told his girlfriend about my schizophrenia, and her first question was “Well, if she goes off her meds, will she hurt us?” because that’s all she’d ever heard about schizophrenics.
We never hear the sunshine stories, the stories about the people who were really sick and got better. I know they’ve exist, I’ve read books written by people who’ve recovered, but they never mention those in the news or in interviews.
Sensationalizing schizophrenia is good box office. Also, it doesn’t make the news that someone got his or her med’s adjusted and is doing well.
No not by a long shot, the media loves sensational stories about sz instead of the truth.Which is that we’re not dangerous. Sigh.
I agree with what’s been said. The portrayal of mental illness by the media adds to the stigma.
It doesn’t make headline news that I’ve worked for 33 years with paranoid schizophrenia and now I’m home and ready to do homework for my class.
does the media portray anyone or thing accurately anymore? I watched a clip that showed how nice and awesome mini horses are…that is a dirty lie… I had to elbow a mini horse in the jaw to keep it from attacking my little one… ive never met a nice one…
Little man syndrome.
No one is . 1515
This is how it works, the news is for reporting incidents, not for reporting what is to be expected. The movies are for entertainment, most are not documentaries. Adequate representation of reality is found in studies. I am confident most people know these things.
Most of the destigmatization job has to be done by media but they have their own agenda led by money : emotions are good for business not rationality. Media mediates. Even breaking news are fake immediate. They give the illusion of immediacy and accuracy but they transform the reality. It is the reign of go between, of fallacy.
For what it’s worth you’re an inspiration 77nick77. It isn’t easy dealing with schizophrenia and reading your comments keeps reminding me I can improve.
Thanks! I’m always glad when I can contribute something that helps someone or encourages them.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a poll with such clear results!
“Are we portraited accurately by the media?”
I don’t partake in media to a sufficient degree to know.
