Mental illness & substance abuse- a two way street

Here is a link on it with some revealing insights:

Mental illness and substance use: genes show a two-way street | Psyche Ideas

Some quotes:

On tobacco use…
“There was some evidence that mental illness can cause people to smoke more. However, there was much stronger evidence that smoking increases the risk of developing mental illness, particularly the risk of depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. A plausible explanation for this is that toxic compounds from inhaled cigarette smoke cause inflammation and oxidative stress in cells throughout the body, processes that are known.”

On cannabis use…
“Another relationship of particular interest is that between cannabis use and schizophrenia. While cannabis is often mentioned as a risk factor for developing psychosis and schizophrenia (a psychotic disorder), convincing proof of the causal nature of this relationship was previously lacking. Mendelian randomisation studies now indicate that, similar to smoking, there is a two-way relationship: cannabis appears to increase the risk of schizophrenia, but the reverse is also true, in that those liable to schizophrenia are more likely to start using cannabis.”

And overall a warning on smoking…

“Overall, however, these studies provide important new insights, showing that the relationship between substance use and mental illness is even more complex than previously thought. Particularly impactful is the finding that smoking could lead to mental illness”

A great read, highly recommended…

Well one or two cups of coffee a day is good for you. Food is obviously essential, but can get out of control.

Food is not a drug but I certainly over consume it as if it were a drug.
Binge eating is not healthy.
Food is my addiction.

I am addicted to food too. I have a very unhealthy relationship with food. Like an abusive lover type thing.

My drug of choice is opioids. It helps control my symptoms and makes me feel great but I’m past that now.

When I use to smoke cigs and weed I would mix them together in my joints.

That is what the British do. The prevalence of hash in the 70/80/ and beginning of 90’s meant that tobacco was always used.

Nowadays, I don’t know…

I can’t take opioids as I dissociate for a day or two, and remember nothing. Not even getting high at all. A switch goes off and it is DID time, so it is pointless to me.

Done the weed thing and the drink. A strong Builders Tea and the vape does me now.
As you grow older - you rely less on substances like weed and opiates and ETOH.

Your strongest tool is your mind - and you learn not to jeopardize it with mind altering substances.

Primarily - people use drugs to escape their demons. Once you challenge them head on - there is no need to pollute your mind anymore.

Well said.

I haven’t smoked weed for over 19 years, nor smoked tobacco for 17 years and now no alcohol for 4 months.

It has been amazing to me that I am not really craving them much, if at all.

To head towards enlightenment for me is to be pure of mind and that means no intoxicants. So far so good…

I didn’t start smoking until 26. And that’s around the time I started having mental health issues.
