Why does the media often call big criminals mentally ill? They said Hitler was mentally ill but how can a mentally ill person be so functional and lead a country? I just saw earlier some news websites calling Putin mentally ill and that now his mental status is suffering.
I think some news websites just like to add drama.

Its because they don’t understand what mental illness is, and that mental illness has become a scapegoat for the media to prescribe to someone who does evil things. You’re absolutely right about Hitler; you couldn’t both be severely mentally ill and run the Third Reich at the same time. No, I’m sorry, but you put most mentally ill people there and they’ll become even more dysfunctional. I can’t imagine me running a fascist government when I was catatonic and very delusional. Again, its a scapegoat that demotes mental illness and bypass the real insidious cause; that some people just do evil things. Honestly, I get kind of apoplectic when I hear this atrocious banthan fodder.

Because the media is SO poor at portraying complex issues in anything except the most simplistic, binary sound bites.
While both Hitler and Putin might be (have been) megalomaniacs, it is not clear that either one suffer(ed) from a diagnosable mental disorder. Their minds may have been corrupted by power, but neither appears to have been medically classifiable as insane.

I can’t say about other countries, but in the UK a substantial number of prisoners are ‘functionally illiterate’.

mentally ill is open to interpretation. sz is a certain diagnostic category. hitler had obsessive ideas was genocidal, megalomaniac, and had emotional issues. What mental illness he had is not for me to diagnose but if mental health is normal functioning of the brain then he was not mentally healthy. i dont know what news you are watching (youtube?)but I dont see much mental illness in putin.
