Memory Deficits in Schizophrenia: It's All About the Neurons

I went the wrong way on my way to the storage place a couple of days ago. I was worried. I’m lucky that I live in my home town, so I know where most everything is.

On a scale of 0 to 10 my sense of direction rates about a 0.5- 1.0 . That, coupled with a fear of getting lost, means I’m very restricted where I’ll go.
One of my major anxieties over my forthcoming move centres round finding my way around in new surroundings.

My entire life I’ve been bad directionally. GPS is a lifesaver.

Would poor map reading skills be a barrier to using one? I am not sure how a GPS would explain things .

My gps tells me “turn left at Main St, 300 ft” so no map reading skills necessary. If you have a mobile phone that you can access google maps it should do the same, including walking or bus routes.

I’ve just looked on Amazon for handheld ones.(a) They seem expensive and (b) The pictures of the phone screens tend to show a map.

If you already have a smartphone, you don’t need a separate device.

It does show a map but it also will verbally tell you what to do and provide written directions.

I’ll mess with my phone and see if I can be more specific. Do you have an Android phone?

I guess a lot of people use google maps/GPS on their smartphone, but I don’t have one. I have a c2005 mobile which I’ve hardly used and not for several years. Given my usage not sure I could justify buying one .

Well, it could be cheaper than a gps device, not sure. But either should provide you with written and verbal directions as well as visual landmarks. At least the newer ones. Google is big on landmark based navigation.

The ones that are meant for hiking might just provide a map. Probably you want something for city navigation.

In the US you can get a cheap smartphone for maybe $60 - but you do have to have data service to use the gps.

I’ve had to use Google maps to remember how to get to my own house and look on my drivers to get my address. That scares me far more than any voices etc. My brain fog is ridiculously bad some days

I don’t have it quite that bad but I have to consult gps for which exit for a location I visit 2x a week. You would think I would remember by now.
