Could we make some sort of “Spoiler” or something that would prevent thread viewers from seeing the contents of the thread unless they click “See” so that people can express themselves without possibly offending or triggering the people who chose not to see it?
I know people on this forum are extremely sensitive and can be easily traumatized.
The typical convention we use for trigger warnings is to either make the thread title clearly about the topic that might be triggering, or to add TW: graphic injury (or whatever else you might be warning for).
Just putting the spoiler blur or saying the words TW tends to be useless, because people are triggered by a variety of things, and unless they have a vague idea of what the trigger warning is for, they will have to click on it anyways to find out.
For example, if the trigger is for surviving a violent attack, good thread titles might be
Anxiety worse since I was attacked
Trouble sleeping ever since (TW assault)
These tell the person that you will be discussing assault, but with few enough details that the words themselves aren’t highly triggering. It is a good warning for people who can’t handle such topics to stay away, and also a good advertisement for people who have overcome these issues and can offer advice.
A less useful title might be
Trouble sleeping ever since…
Anxiety issues (TW)
Neither of these provide enough information to let peopel know what will be discussed. The TW could be about drug use, the death of a loved one, being called a nasty name, becoming homeless, etc. There’s no way to know, and people who have different triggers will end up avoiding your thread out of caution.
