I suggest finding “Mad in America” by Robert Whitaker and reading it. The author is on our side. It details the history of the treatment of the mentally ill and the present day status of treatment. I didn’t entirely agree with him, but most of it made perfect sense.

I’ve read a lot about this book. I know it’s pretty controversial.
