L-Theanine or Taurine?

Hey all,

New to the forums here, just want to say hello first of all.

Just want to ask a simple question;

What’s the difference between l Theanine or Taurine?

They both bind to the GABA site, but what makes them unique?

I’ve read somewhere that L- Theanine potentiates the effects of Sarcosine, but personally I find that Taurine enhances Sarcosine by ALOT. Sarcosine duration is somewhere about 2 hours (right)? Well, after taking 2g of Taurine, the effects lasts for about 5-6 hours.

Thoughts?

From webmd.com

Taurine is POSSIBLY SAFE for adults and children when taken by mouth in appropriate amounts. Taurine has been used safely in adults in studies lasting up to one year. It has been given safely to children for up to 4 months. People enrolled in research studies have not reported any side effects connected with the use of taurine. However, there is one report of brain damage in a body-builder who took about 14 grams of taurine in combination with insulin and anabolic steroids. It is not known if this was due to the taurine or the other drugs taken.

Special Precautions & Warnings:
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the safety of taurine in pregnancy and during breast-feeding. Avoid using it.

Bipolar disorder: There is some concern that taking too much taurine might make bipolar disorder worse. In one case, a 36-year-old man with adequately controlled bipolar disorder was hospitalized with symptoms of mania after consuming several cans of an energy drink containing taurine, caffeine, inositol, and other ingredients (Red Bull Energy Drink) over a period of 4 days. It is not known if this is related to taurine, caffeine, inositol, a different ingredient, or a combination of the ingredients.

!!! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for, another alternative treatment for schizophreina! I am already taking sarcosine with great results and this is supposed to amplify it, I will leave and go buy some right now!

Stupid question : is this the same stuff found in monster energy drinks. " taurine "

Yes it is.

Personally, for me, I find that l Theanine makes me manic, paranoid and anxious. (This is only in my situation) Taurine on the other hand, kind of makes me mello out. (But it’s different for everybody.)

L THEANINE didn’t do anything for me whatsoever.

I wish it did I’m in need of a natural benzo

I might give this a go at some point. Although l-theanine seems to be working fairly well for me

I just got back from the drugstore with a bottle of Taurine, any ideas on how much I should take? It comes in 500mg caplets and recommends 1 4x per day, i have started with that. Also do you think this will interact with clozapine? I have been in a predicament lately where sarcosine and clozapine cancel eachother out and I need both, I have been taking my clozapine in the day and I take a dose of sarcosine at night, I am not getting enough clozapine like this but sarcosine helps me so much I have to keep taking it.

I have no idea about that. I think Sarcosine and Clozapine might cancel each other out.

So much for that, I took one dose and got extremely ill and nearly threw up, then I got this sick feeling mentally, I will never talke it again!

They’re doing a trial of clozapine with sodium benzoate. Sodium benzoate is a d amino acid oxidase inhibitor. Apparently it can enhance NMDAR function, as can sarcosine, but it does it via another mechanism.

Maybe that would help.

I would love to try it but I believe it has been shown to cause cancer in large amounts, it is a pretty harsh chemical, there is nothing natural about it.

I just checked online and sodium benzoate converts into benzene when in contact with Vitamin C, a extremely carcinogenic substance, a good dose of that is an almost guaranteed death sentence.

Thanks for the report back. I’ll probably avoid it.

Feel free not to take it, or not to mix it with vitamin C, (probably a good idea) but this is not the danger you think it is. The links below may help explain.

I would strongly advise you not to take Taurine, I took a dose of it yesterday afternoon and I nearly threw up and was deathly ill, now the next day I still feel it’s effects, it won’t wear off! I hope it is not permanent! I should have been more careful with this stuff.

Both sarcosine + NAC (N-Acetyl-Cystine) and Vitamin B Complex (B-Supreme), L-5-MTFL, L-Tyrosine , L-Tryptophan, Vitamin K (MK-7), and Vitamin D are harmless and have a powerful effect but I would avoid Taurine like the plague, I am still feeling ill from taking it.

I am finding myself craving more Taurine even though it makes me ill, I think it is addictive!

That’s probably why they put it into energy drinks :astonished:

I take taurine before I go to bed. When I first started taking it I would get a similar feeling until I passed out and slept it off. It basically puts you to sleep. I only take 1 gram to 1.5 grams. I’ve gone as high as 3 grams. People with schizophrenia are deficient in taurine so I think it helps a bit. It’s not a drug, we all have taurine in our bodies.
