I think it’s only being considered if all other options have failed.
Esketamine (a form of ketamine without the side effects of pure ketamine) is in phase III trials for treatment resistant depression.

I’ve heard that ketamine can cause psychosis. Is there a danger for those with sz?

Isn’t ketamine a class-A drug?
I tried to participate in studies for it and they wouldn’t allow me because of my psychotic symptoms

i thought ketamine was a pain killer.
Ketamine is an animal tranquilizer specifically used for cats. It’s basically a vetrinary drug
I read an article years ago that claimed ketamine was used as a sedative by dental surgeons, and that there had been cases of it triggering psychotic episodes. I never looked into it further. I never knew veterinarians use it.
In schizophrenia patients, ketamine provokes psychotic symptoms at doses that have minimal effects on healthy individuals, resulting in alterations in the connectivity of brain networks broadly implicated in cognition.
I have heard it is used on non-sz volunteers to mimic the cognitive symptoms of sz for research purposes.

If I took it in the presence of a very well-trained psychologist, and had anxiolytics and/or other medications to quell any bad experiences on hand and readily available, then I would certainly give it a try. Drugs like that would terrify me by myself.

It’s my first post here, so hi everyone!
After reading some reports on ketamine and it effects on depression, i decided to give it try.
I’ve been on Escitalopram,Sertraline, Fenaflaxine, Wellbutrin and what not and none of this medication really worked. It made me either maniac, compulsive or so depressed i cried in public places or having suicidal thoughts
My experience with ketamine was really great so far, for the first time in years i leaved my bed not because “i have to”, but because “i want to”, watched tv not because “i’m bored” but because “maybe theres something interesting”.
Motivation, joy and excitement are back and it feels 100% natural. It didn’t trigger my psychosis.
I’m planning to try the non-psychoactive metabolit hydroxynorketamine and report if someones interested.
This is not an advice to take any drugs, everyone is responsible for their own health!
But if you’re deep in the rabbit hole, this could be a real option to talk about with your doc.

I’ve heard it’s pretty brutal. For treatment resistant it’s probably an option but you’d like to see the science first. I’d imagine it would be like electro therapy. Something you do if all else fails.
I tried it recently. I made my stomach upset and gave me a headache. Didn’t help any symptoms at all. I don’t know why people swear up and down about “alternative medicine X will with help your problems”
Maybe it works for them. But not most of us.
Hey @ohemma - thanks for sharing. Mind if I ask, are you taking ketamine by IV or tablet? How long were you on it before you noticed an improvement? Were you in hospital while starting it?
Just so we’re clear, this ketamine, is it the same ketamine that’s horse tranquilizers the cool kids did in high school? I remember it was the trendy drug to do. (Never did it)
Don’t get me wrong, I have no problems with alternative medicine. I think it’s good people are trying new things.

Ketamine is a schedule 3 drug. It is heavily abused and is not something you take regularly. It’s a discciative psychedelic. Read up on what a k hole is. This isn’t something a skitzo should take.
