Just got a DNA kit for my birthday

I used ancestry dna and surprisingly found out I’m mostly west european with only a little scottish/irish/wales. There’s reams of family history data from my mom’s family that’s English and Norman.
I have a little Scandinavian, which surprised my aunt. We think that’s from y donor.

The low confidence regions were interesting, but obviously possibly a mistake. Like Southern Europe. Lol my half brother is darker and about a third Italian. It’d be funny if I’m somehow %4 Italian.

That’s just what our doctor told me. It was news to me. The Romans mingled with the Germanic tribes quite a bit, but I don’t think they intermarried.

I’d be surprised if I was part Asian. My daughter is part Subsaharan African (like 3%) so idk if I am or that comes from her dads family

Didn’t a lot of ppl come to the US. I mean like the poles and the Jews and even Asians early on. The Chinese built the transcontinental railroad

Yes. That is very true. Maybe I misspoke when I said the white people in the U.S. are mostly Celtic. I was just repeating what the doctor told me. Maybe he meant most of the white people of Anglo descent were mostly Celtic. My mother told me that a lot of people in Oklahoma have a lot of Scotch Irish blood in them. I’m a quarter Scotch Irish myself. It seems like most of the people I talk to in Oklahoma are about a quarter German. I’m a quarter German myself. I’m an eighth Chickasaw Indian, and the rest I don’t know.

I know I have to have some Irish in me my maiden name was Irish. I’m probably at least 70% white but I look like a half Indian

There were Jews who lived in Spain (Iberian peninsula) back in the day

Spanish Jews spoke a language called Ladino.

Interesting. I didn’t know that.

It seems that any time people start discussing their ancestry in the U.S. they start rattling off about a half dozen different ethnicities. Basically, I’m American.

Yeah. It’s a melting pot for sure.

That’s true too. My daughter’s father is an immigrant from Ecuador but my daughter is definitely all American. She loves macncheese and :pizza:

Interesting! I’m 80ish % Eastern European and the rest Portuguese and Asian. My entire life I thought I was Irish and native.

Also theoretically speaking based on my genetics I get my bipolar from moms side and schizophrenia from dads side. what happens when two crazies have a baby :joy:

There is a test using your DNA to determine if your susceptible (or something like that?) to certain genes like schizophrenia. It was free and I found a lot of really useful and awful information on myself through it. It was called genome I believe.

Don’t be surprised if you’re not. I have an Irish last name and I’m not at all Irish. My mother and I’s DNA testing became back with hundreds of years worth of last names that we can trace to our relatives and none are my last name which possibly means a male ancestor chose or took this last name when coming to Canada rather than being born with it.

Wow. I didn’t know that. I’ll be disappointed if I’m not NA tho.

I said the same thing. But in turn I learned I’m Portuguese and I’m pretty okay with that

I was slightly disappointed to find out I was sooooo European. Lolol

That’s cool. If it’s Ancestry DNA anything below a certain percentage doesn’t have a lot of reliability. You mentioned possibly being part Indian? That sounds kind of cool. There was rumors that there might be some Native American in my family, but if so my gene’s didn’t express them? The last name of my great great grandpa was Irish and the rumor was he was a little Indian. But I’m told it was hard to get my great grandpa’s mom to admit who it was or talk about him. I’m sure the way society looked at such things was way more conservative at the time.

There was possible 1% Caucasus Mountain region for me. I guess except for the lack of English/Great Britain it mostly turned out how I expected.
